Can anyone tell me whether there are any restrictions as to where you can cycle in France. In the same way as we are not supposed to cycle on footpaths etc.
Also where would I find a copy of the laws relating to mountain biking in France.

There is a french cycling federation website that you can go to, IIRC it may be www.ffc.fr ??????
I'm unsure as to whether there are different grades of RoW over there. Overall they are much more tolerant of cycling than here, but apart from many obvious areas, alps, pyrennees etc, there doesn't seem to be as much mountain biking, yet road cycling is up there with football & rugby as a popular pastime.

"road cycling is up there with football & rugby as a popular pastime." And fecking big dogs too. So watch out :)

Dogs?? In france?? Never ;-)
And they seem fitter as well 1.5k is my record distance for being hunted down by a dog in France, my HRM was reading 196 bpm by the time I had lost him and that was only as the road went downhill. My mother lives in France when I visit her I avoid all the roads with farm entrances on as the dogs are really evil looking with big fangs and wild eyes (this is not helped as I am shit scared of dogs at the best of times)

 and they're rabid

janne corax was once chased by a tibetan mastiff for 37 km - it finally gave up at the crest of a 17000 ft pass. tibetan dogs often hang around sky burial sites so they develop a taste for human flesh...

My daughter had a chunk taken out of her arm by a Japanese Akita. The police said these dogs are bred for bringing down Samurai horses. The owner is pleading not guilty for not being able to control his dog.

fukcing idiot. i was bitten as a kid and still have the scar, it went sceptic despite all the injections etc. i am still terrified of hounds when cycling, i never know whether or not to stop or to try and out-accelerate them.

Arthur, if he is pleading not guilty, does that mean he should be charged with Assault? If he was in control of his dog, then he wanted the dog to attack your daughter!
Good point OBM. there is a court case pending and it is actually the police who are prosecuting him. I'll let you know. We were all baffled as to how he could plead not guilty. What made it worse was him not having it on a short lead. My daughter was also wearing a denim jacket, if she hadn't I think she could have lost her arm.

if it's good for the royal family then it's ok for thugs obviously.
hmm there's not much difference really is there??
I alway thought this was a really strong reason for moving to Iceland. Dogs banned in Rekjavijk allegedly.
Yeah Sloboy, I believe the Akita is related to the Wolf.
iceland ok, no dogs, but they eat puffins and putrified shark.
Aren't all dogs related to the wolf?
If poodles are it must be a very distant relative
Full-size poodles are hunting dogs, used as retrievers in water. They're clipped that way to keep the mud out of their woolly fur. I wouldn't argue with one.

There;s the French equivalent of the CTC - http://www.ffct.org/ (Fédération Française du Cyclotourisme).
Off-roading seems to be quite popular in france. A lot of towns run off-road criteriums and randoneés. Watch out for mentions of VTT (velos tout-terrain) on posters in the countryside.
