I want discs!
But I'm very cheap...

Actually, I can't afford discs. I can afford one brake - either Deore 555, or 556 at sale prices, or Magura Julie. I could probably drop some hints about the second one for my birthday.

What do you reckon I should go for? And before you start the standard BM chant of "For just £20 more..." I can't afford £20 more.

do you have disc compatable hubs? if not you will need new wheels or your old rims built onto a new hub.....= more expence

if you can stretch to the magura's go for them
Yeah, got disc hubs already, plus mounts on fork & frame.
What can I do about hose mounts on the frame - I've got crappy plasticy loop things holding the cables at the moment, but I'd prefer something sturdier.
Wiggle have the 04 Julies, but CRC have the 02 versions for about £20 less each - is there a major difference?

If you so poor there are three places where you get good bargains: BM classifieds,
STW classifieds& ebay ,see what you can get there its alot better get a slighlty used good brake rather than a new crap brake for the same price.

Beware of the CRC Julies, you may find they're OEM brakes with plastic lever blades. These are probably the worst discs i've ever seen, avoid them like the plague! The current generation ones, or ones with metal levers seem significantly better. Or, for just £775 more, you could get XTR discs with dual control shifters and XTR wheels, joking!

M556 Deore's IMO, if you're on a budget
You know, Nick, on further consideration of my finances...

Really, I want to upgrade now, because my old Vs are showing signs that they're not working as smoothly as they might (although I do take good care of them), and my rims are starting to wear a bit. Might as well get some discs now, and save myself the expense of forking out for two new wheel builds.

although i've broken one of mine so i dunno wether to recommend them or curse them.

for the money very good.
No, if I'm going discwards, I want to go all the way. I tried out some cable discs at a bike shop the other day, and they just felt wrong.

nowt wrong with 02 julies in my eyes,

they do take a bit to get right and bed in but if you do it the way the manufacturers recommend you will get there.the only tool you need for them is an allen key and there just as simple to maintain as a pair of Vs.

not as good as most of the higher priced ones but beggers cant be too choosy :)

i find them simple and easy to use but yes the plastic levers suck i must admit. ive snapped the tip of one. you can replace them with alloy ones for £30 EACH.
Blech! The 2004 ones have alloy blades, do they not?

yes mate. 02 was the last ones not to.

Go for the julies! i have 02's and they are great, i think www.bikedock.com were the cheapest when i bought them.
What did I just say, David? Tut tut.

it's up 2 u m8. ur monry ur bike but don't blame me if u happen to hit a tree.
Don't worry. I always blame the mud/the weather/the bike/Karma/George Bush/El Niňo/witchcraft whenever I hit a tree.

Thats just silly, everyone knows that George Bush and El Nino are to blame when you hit a drainage ditch or an off camber root too fast, tree collisions are the work of malevolant leprechauns.

if you're on a budget get the avids £110 @ cyclesurgery for the complete set plus speed dial 7 levers awesome
