 Folks
What with the oil prices going up (they should really reduce the size of a barrel of oil to make it sound like more) and the fact I've got a brand spanking new Specialized Rockhopper disc 2004 (yay!) I have been trying to work out a route to work (ca. 16 miles away) which doesn't involve me being turned into roadkill.
How many people here use a bike to go to work or use it to nip out to grab a pint of milk etc, as opposed to jumping in the passion wagon?

I sold my car, (Was forced to sell my car by the girlfriend/new house) but then used the money to buy a bike that cost more than my car did!!! Haa Haaa bitch! But I have to ride to work, although it is ony a few miles away.

I'm a rep who does 48,000 miles a year, so no I don't use my bike for work.
John M
PS work pays for ALL my fuel ;-)
 no,
i ride cos its fun.
i don't have a licence,(never have), so i have to use one of the bikes for getting to and from work, shopping, etc. however, the gf has a 2l sierra jobby, so we can get around the country doing our hobby.
i ride my bmw f650gs when i'm feeling lazy !10minutes of adrenalin :-)
i ride my pushbike when i can get my arse in gear.45 minutes, best option: if i take a detour of 1 mile, i get a 1 mile singletrack through the woods on the way home: 110% yes!
if i'm really really slack i take the car. git drivers, queueueues and wakner car drivers to fight through... crap solution.
2 wheels good. 4 wheels bad

don't have to pay to park the bike and it odesnt line old two jags pockets either, so i use me bike for everything apart from shopping, as i have to take wifey and the nipper. for long journeys tend to use the train and take the bike on it
Bike most days for most things, it's nice to be able to speak to people on the way to the shops.
 I dont drive :)
 i don't drive either :)
Anything less than 5miles I use the bike for unless I'm in a hurry, have done for ages, just not that lazy!!!
Sometimes, if it's non essential upto 20miles I'll use the bike to.
infact the cars main use is ferrying the bike around :)

I always rode to work (note past tense as I've recently given up my job) come rain, thunder, sleet, snow (not that we ever got it that often in, London) or shine.
Only a sixteen mile round trip though. A decent set of waterproofs are obviously essential, (I have a pair of Pearl Izumi Allegro trousers, and a race face jacket). I'd say it's worth spending some money on them, as the more expensive materials don't leave you sweating like a pregnant nun, unless of course you're a fatty :-)
The only downside being that when caught in the occasional downpour I'd usually end up buying new trainers to wear at work while I hoped that my cycling shoes would dry out by the end of my shift.
On the positive, there's nothing quite as enjoyable as hearing the frost crack under rubber in the early morning. Or overtaking roadies on one of the climbs (admitedly only 250 feet).

They should force people to ride bikes for any journeys under 5 miles in a town. Yay a facist cycling state! Enforced lycra wearing, kids practicing fixing punctures at school every morning, 20 lane cycleways, bikes subsidised by the government, manditory HRMs...
ahh I can only dream, but one day, one day...
i always take my bike to work. car takes me and bike away for weekends. perfect.
I only live 500 yards away from work so I walk. I don't take my bike anywhere in my town exept to see the g/f as she's got a garage....it would get stolen/vandalised in 10 minutes in my town.
i probably do four times the amount of miles a week on the bike than i do in the van
i'd go to work on my bike if they made the raods safer i started this job in november and there has been 5 fatal accidents on the road past our work its only 9 miles
5 fatals, in a 9mile road, no back way to get there on bike and stay the hell away from that road ??
I avoid roads, like the plague these days, back when I was young and car less I used to ride 30miles to work and back everyday, up a Dual track with Cars passing at 90mph+ most of the time, without giving it a second thought.
But as a Driver and seeing how Crap the average driver is, I keep Road work to a Min, and use the path when possible.

Haven't had a car for over 8 years. Cycle to work in all weather. Cycle at work. Cycle to the shops; got a bike hod for large amounts of shopping.
Saw that "The Day After Tomorrow" yesterday. Didn't cycle to the cinema; got a bus. But anyway it's crap. Apart from the well publicised tidal wave hitting New York the rest is every save the world from flooding/an asteroid/disater of your choice genre of films.
Mind you, the trailer for King Arthur looked good.

Tidal wave hitting new york was excellent, loads of death, hey only americans got way to many of them :)
The Pres dying aswell, we can only hope hey :)
Pls explain why, the Ice Age only affected the North, other than well it's a american film who else is going to effect, Europe did get a mention though and Scotland!!
