I currently have a set of Hutchinson Scorpion Tubeless 2.30 and im realy happy with how well they protect me from punturse and they are quite light but i don't like the lack of grip. How do other tyres fair on the punture resistance v's weight scale? Any experiance good or bad wanted, thank you.
The Scorpions seem to be quite fussy about the rider and bike weight. I'm using 1.75 Scorpions but my mate who is about 3stone heavier than me has to use the 2.0's. If you're quite light then try a narrower Scorpion such as the '2.0 Tubeless Light', it's about 100g lighter than the regular 2.0 and doesn't seem to suffer from anymore punctures (sp). You could also try adjusting the tyre pressures as most people who run Scorpions don't complain about a lack of grip, just the wear rate.
Chris, they only work as true tubeless tyres on UST rims.
OK, back to tyres. What sort of bike are you riding, how much do you weigh, what sort of terrain do you have problems on and what pressures are you using?
Gemini 1000 2003, it is a sub 30lb trail bike befor dale thought about the profit. I am 13.5 14 stone, i ride lots of singletrack little downill blasts, all day epics. I ride on most conditions and i was having problems with gravel and wet mud. i was running 33 front 35 rear.
OK, well my 15 stone mate is riding a Scalpel with the 2.0 tyres at 30-35 in most conditions. I would expect you to get on better with the narrower tyres or dropping the current ones just below 30. For the record I'm running the 1.75's at around 40 depending on the terrain.
When we were at Afan last Sunday one of the guys was having his first ride on UST and he was finding it a bit sketchy. When we lowered his tyre pressures from 60 down to 30 he found it a lot better! He was on 2.0 Scorpion Light's.
on the subject of the tyres i did lower them but i found i was getting farting problems. it think i might be on the best ust around so i will just play some more with pressure.
Chris, i think it climbs amazingly. i have come from heavier bikes so it is bound to feel like that but i have never had problems. if you are used to single pivot suspension it helps and if you are finding the going hard you have a handy lock out. i would recommend that bike to anyone.
My favourite UST tyre is the Schwalbe skinny jimmy - it copes with almost all conditions except very loose surfaces, even find grip on mud, chalk and roots. The 1.95 version doesn't corner brilliantly (the black shark is better) but is OK. If you want a larger tyre then you could try the standard 'Jimmy', which has the same tread pattern, but with a larger carcass.
As for puncture resistance, I use latex in my USTs, and that makes a very big difference.
