Just got myself a new Orange 5 frame and so am building my old hardtail into a single speed. Will any cranks take just the one ring or do I need to buy single speed specific cranks?
I dont have any old cranks so need to get some and at the moment I have a new job so feel like treating myself. Seen Middleburn RS7 Uno crankset but like I said would any pair of cranks do or indeed anything cheaper single speed?
Any cranks will do, just remove the inner and outer chain rings. To do this you'll need to have shorter chain ring bolts (as there is no outer chain ring), which you can either buy or bodge by filling the bolts down or spacing the bolts out with washers.
If you do decide to go for new cranks, you might want to consider getting a slightly longer crank to give you a bit more leverage at low cadences. Although this is a matter of personal taste, and leg length. As regards which cranks, it's down to your own taste and budget. I have race face turbines as they are light strong and pimpy.
chain lines important, so when you buy the cranks it might be worthwhile taking the bike with you if you're getting new ones and making sure the axle is the right length for the chain line, as it's your only adjustment.
any old cranks will do. i got some real old lx ones that work fine. chainline can be changed at the rear of the bike on most adaptor kits. i prefer running mine in the middle at the front. built my ss out of broken and cheap bits, and then refreshed them. i wouldn't buy a middleburn as your'e limited on the ringsize build out of old parts and recycle some old kit.scan the small ads. good luck
