Hi there folks! /f is looking to buy a '04 or '05 Spesh Hardrock. The models we are looking at come with Shimano 475 mech discs.

Does anone have any exp of these?? I know that usually a good pair of V's are better than Mech discs...

If 475 brakes are lame, I'll get the shop to take 'em off, and I'll slap some decent V's on, or pick up some Magura Julies or similar on Ebay.

I've use formula, Magura and Hope discs in my time, and have no expof mech discs.

Advice is appreciated.

disc hubs and disc already fitted how much to upgrade the calipers to hydros is a question i would ask.

Anyway, I'm def thinking that if the 475s are "ropey" then a nice pressie might be to slap some Julies/Claras on. IT'll be cheaper to get some 2nd hand than get Evans bikes etc to do it... She'll need to change the saddle etc n doubt, as she's going for the non-womans model

At the end of the day, she's not too bothered what's on it, as long as its safe, reliable n won't need constant fettling....

Shimano 515 cable discs are in fact very good & Kato is taliking out of his ass again.

Perhaps he should try using these things before making untrue comments about bike gear like he always does.

I have to say the Shimano cable discs on my wife's bike were fine stopping wise, however because of arthritis in her hands, I did end up swaping them for Deore hydros as less lever pressure is needed.

Also the M756 XT 4 pots are shit as well.

Have you ever tried a hydraulic disc brake? Infitily better than the cable ones in terms or power, modulation, weight and consistancy

I only make comments on bikes and componants I have direct experience of. Which, since I've been MTBing for 15 years is quite extensive BTW

Yes I have used hydraulic disc brakes & yes they are very good & yes most are better than cables but also Deore/Avid cable discs are very good & I would never say they are shit because this is just not true.

Does anyone put in their real name & address here I think not I'm not asking for a meet with you so we can test our brakes out & see who has the best although I'm sure you do don't you.

I think the best way around this is for you to keep your comments to yourself if I post & I will do like wise & if thats no good then who really cares.

I'd of said, There Crap, but Better than V's, especially in mud, you can upgrade later.

Notice on that site, Kato and me, also came up with a solution, a cheap one as required, might end up being a crap solution, but we tried :)

Spider, 525's are way better than, any Cable brake, I run 1 on the rear, with a EBC upgrade kit to 180mm, and like that, there pretty perfect really.

Your, better off with Magura Julie's though for the same price pretty much.

Kato's right 475s are crap i had a pair on my Dale an had no end of trouble with them, a good set of vees were better in all but the wettest of conditions. go Hydro!

Also i think that may be you shopuld sort out your differences in your own thread good to see at least kato appologised about ruining some ones thread, as always he is trying to be polite, while not taking shit from some overly abusive twat. I've only been here a while but katos helped me with a few kit issues.

nah not really, Kato's okay though, especially if he sells me his XT caliper with new pads, dirty cheap :)
