i wear specialized shoes, but they got these sneaky vents all over them that are great in the summer, but are causing my feet to freeze. i'm wearing sport socks with sealskinz over the top, but after five minutes cycling can't feel my feet cause of the cold.
whats the easiest solution??
i could go buy soem winter boots, but they seem to be like hens teeth at the moment. so whats a cheap and simple way to sort this out?
You can pick up the Shimano winter boot cheap in most shops Steve. Usually about £80 or so but Sloboy probably offered the best solution. Neoprene booties. You'll look like a jeyboy, but who cares when you've got warm feet! :-)
Buy a set of Shimano's latest winter boots...insulated and waterproof...they are superb and have enabled me to bin my neoprene overshoes, which I hated.
If you want to go cheap, put a plastic bag over each shoe (like in Snatch), but put a whole in the bottom for the SPDs. Might work, but you might look silly, but i bet your feet wouldnt be half as wet....im always thinking :)
Seal Skinz do a thermal water proof sock for about 25 sqwids. Since getting a pair I have never had cold feet. (The week before last I rode the cut gate path in the snow and ice-feet fine
I just ordered some Gaerne Polar MTB Competition Shoes off wiggle. They seem to get good reviews, and look like they will be warm and waterproof. I have tried overshoes, sealskinz and extra socks all to no avail, and consider that even 120 quid is money well spent, if it allows me to do winter epics without coming back with unpleasantly frozen feet. After all, if cold feet put you off going out, all the rest of the stuff you have is unused regardless of how good it is. Any other solution I tried just seems to fail after a few hours of muddy riding. I particularly hate overshoes, as the velco seems to come undone after walking through the odd muddy bit.
I'll post back to this thread when I try them this weekend.
Yet another vote here for sealskinz waterproof socks, the mid thermal merino wools are pretty much toasty in most conditions. Advice above about wiggling your toes now & then is good advice too. & i suppose the odd bit of walking does no harm either!
My seal skinz socks have just arrived from the surplusandadventure store, but they are not the same seal skinz socks I bought a couple of years ago from local bike shop. they appear to be more like a oversock?? I will try them this weekend and reply back.
