Im thinking of getting the XT disc kit with XT hubs, just wondering if the cassette i have at the moment will fit directly its an 8sp XT......few years old still works ok

yeh but arent there 9sp specific hubs mike?, i assume for an 8 you'd just need a spacer?

8, 9 and 10 speed cassettes are the same width Dan - no spacer needed.

As John says, 8 and 9 are the same overall width - 9spd sprockets are thinner and closer together. 7 and 8spd sprockets are (roughly) the same width and spacing, so an 8spd freehub is wider than a 7spd one - you can put a 7spd cassette on an 8spd freehub with a spacer, but not the other way around.
