Right, I've got the go ahead for a new bike! I will have to sell my trusty hardtail though. I would like to keep it as a winter bike but haven't got the room to store it. It's a 2001 or 2002 Rockhopper comp with 04 Marzocchi MX comps and 04 Magura Julie brakes. Do I sell complete or sell the brakes and fork seperate and sell the bike with it's original fork and Vs? How much could I expect to get for the original bike? All will be going on Ebay as tis the season to sell on there.
The rule of thumb is that second hand gear tends to be worth about 30% what you paid for it unless it's old and / or knackered and / or has a lower RRP now than when you bought it, in which case it'll be worth much less. Suggest you look around on eBay and on the classifieds here and work out what the "market" value of your bike is in original form and add that to the 30% value of your Marz's and Julies. Decent price? Then sell them separately.
HOWEVER, also consider the market forces at work here. It may be the case that you won't be able to shift the 'Hopper in "original format" for love or money, but WOULD be able to shift if with the Marz's and Julies attached, in which case sell it as a modified bike.
On a personal note, I would have thought that you stand more chance of winning the lottery than selling a '02 Hopper in original form as many punters would expect upgrades to have been effected over the yearts, so it's probably in your best interests to bite the bullet and sell the bike as it is now.
I've kept an eye on ebay the last couple of weeks and from what I've seen I think I'll get
£90 for the forks
£90 for the brakes
Bike? there's a 2001 rockhopper going for £160 at the minute, completely original apart from the tyres.
Question is, "for £150 or whatever do I find room and use it as winter bike?"
I'm going full suss but as this will be my first I've no idea how bad the winter will be on the shock, bearings etc.
I know there are so many factors to take into account such as how frequent I use it in the winter, the bike design, if I clean and lube after every ride etc.
I've just gone FS and am in the process of selling my old frame and a few bits and pieces, but to be honest the only rreason I'm doing that is because I don't have any room whatsoever in the Shire for another bike (ours is a very small hobbithole).
Sell it. Unless you really want a second money absorbing, maintenance headache. Besides if you get a decent new bike you'll not want to ride the old one.
As for selling separately, might be an idea, the thing that'll let the bike down is saying it's an 01 frame. The rest is good gear and should sell well.
Another suggestion would be to get the new bike and see what it comes with, you might want to keep bits of old bike for spares
Not thought of that Giles. So many options at the minute and I still have to decide on a new bike for my budget and needs. As for keeping the old hardtail the only option I have would be keeping it at my parents (2 sheds and a garage) and picking it up when needed, I would probably just end up riding the full suss.
On the subject of buying a new bike, am I better waiting a few weeks for the reductions? A few bikes have a reduced price already but just wondered when they all start to come down, sorry I'm a Yorkshire man and I always want a bargain. I do really fancy the Orange 5 Deore but the only colour seems to be "Peaty Red/Silver" which I really don't like the sound of.
I'm on the verge of buying a prophet 600/800 or a Giant Reign 2. I'm leaning towards the prophet more because of the test rides I've had on both bikes although I don't think the rear shock was set correctly on the Reign (I had no shock pump with me). The only thing worrying me about the Prophet is the servicing and possible reliability issues of the lefty. I don't mind taking it to be serviced now and again but how often is that as the nearest Dale dealer to me is Evans at Castleford. I know it depends on frequency of use and conditions but how would this compare to Fox or Manitou? Marzocchi don't count.
I'd go for the Reign if I were you, but then I'm biassed - I've never liked Lefties as they limit your ability to fettle, and I ride a Giant Trance. If the Trance is anything to go by, you'll love the Reign (provided it's properly set up!).
hmmmmm, life time warranty on the frame and 2 years on the lefty. I think I'm sold already, the bike just really impressed me on the demo ride. I suppose the best thing to do would be test the Reign again and make sure it's setup correctly.
I'm in a similar predicament, I bought a new bike a few weeks back, with the plan to sell my '02 Gary Fisher sugar 2+ to soften the blow a little. But, I built the sugar from the frame up, full XT, handbuilt wheels with Hope hubs, raceface finishing kit etc. It scares me to think how much money I'll lose. So, do I try and punt the frame and build a nice hardtail with the bits, or bite the bullet and sell it as one and hope for the best? I just don't know.
Either way, I think E-bay is the way to go. A bit more hassle but at this time of year people WILL pay over the odds. I've seen kit go for more on E-bay than CRC or Wiggle.
PTC: I've just suffered exactly that. I was toying with the idea of a new bike, but after looking at how much I'd spent on building up my hardtail, I decided to just buy a FS frame and rebuild.
