It's not.
It's a contrived shot. It's actually a footpath to a view point over the Argentiere glacier. It's good for pictures, but it doesn't go anywhere. You walk up 50m, ride down and take the picture.

James, yes it is up by the Argentiere Glacier.
Sarah, not it's not contrived, it's a totally rideable route down, and I'll be doing it next week. I'll let you know if I have to dodge hoards of contrived photo opportunitists.

But it doesn't go anywhere, and is about 50m long. As I said.
Good for photo's. If you want to do it James, go up in the Grand Montet lift, turn left and follow that trail (is rideable) until it drops off the end. Walk up, ride down. Then do the switchback route down from the back of Plan Joran. Now, THAT'S a trail.

Sarah I am pretty sure that its a rideable trail but if you live in the area do you want to hook up and ride that trail or the other one you are talking about?

Actually Sarah it is ridable.

The climb is up the fireroad and while it hasn't all been ridden at once, every section has. The oxygen debt and moving rocks make a continuous effort very difficult. The trail in the picture is ridable from about 500 meters up from where the picture is taken all the way back down, just very difficult. There are a couple of switchbacks and one rock garden that haven't been cleaned, but thats it. Tim, Jonny and I rode all but those last week.

When I was on that trail a week ago (on foot - day off the bike!) it was swarming with an endles stream of walkers, so could be an opportunity for HSPS (High Speed Pedestrian Slalom)!
