What would be the best upgrade from Giants Mph 2 disk brakes. Have just trashed mine that were on my NRS 2 Wondering what would be the most cost effective upgrade. There are some cracking good deals just now.

If you want to keep with a closed system then you're restricted to either second hand C2's or Avid Juicy 7's. Personally I would get the juicy's. They look quality and are reasonably cheap. (I believe CRC or wiggle are selling them at around £100 each, could be wrong though)

Avids would be nice but not intending spending over 200 quid on brakes. Thinking nearer the 150 mark. The Mph 2's were ok but suffered from pump up thats why i crashed in the first place. Fronts loched solid on my local Dh course.

LMFAO @ the thought of downhilling on mph 2's

Aren't the MPHs basically a licenced copy of the Hope Minis?

I can recommend a set of Julies - good modulation and quite sufficent stopping power for general XC use and the occasional bit of racing (yup, even the hairy-footed Hobbit races occasionally!). My levers or metal although the reservoirs are toughened plastic. To be perfectly honest with you, I'm looking at a number of upgrades on my bike over time, but the brakes isn't one of them.

I have never had any real problems with my Hayes HFX-9's. They can be had a t a good price. Friend runs magura julies and hasnt had a problem for years. Think they were bled for the first time in 3yrs recently.

My mate runs a Giant Terrago with MPH brakes and they look nothing like Hope mini's.

I believe they are copies of the Hope C2's not the Mini's.

I had some (MPh 3's not sure what the difference was). Now run Hayes HFX 9's, I've had numerous problems with both and have given up hope of finding the perfect disc brake, maybe I've just been unlucky.

Ah-ha. I stand corrected. As I understand it, Giant wanted to fit it's bikes with Hopes (C2s - you're right), but these were a bit too far outside of budget to be financially viable. They approached Hope and requested permission to buy the licence to make their own in-house versions of the same design and Hope agreed.
