I bought a pair this weekend, as I couldn't carry on in denial that a worn out summer tyre was going to hack the current filthy conditions.
Bloody hell, are they good or what! I was riding muddy cattle tracks and kept thinking I was going to loose grip and they kept gripping on stuff that you could hardly walk on. I'll probably keep them on my winter hack bike as they really do seem to make a difference in the worst winter weather.
One question. How fast to they wear out on roads? With an aggressive tread and soft rubber, I'd guess not to well, but unless you plan your routes very carefully it's hard to manage a decent all day ride without straying onto tarmac for a few miles to link the other stuff.
my mate tried a cinder over a muddy Cannock on saturday and discovered it was not too good so is changing back to the trusty 'raker. he (podge) may post later regarding how they wear as he very rarely uses the car to get to the Chase.
Yes after a fair bit of road hammering they haven't shown signs of premature wear yet and my ride to the Chase is 11 miles either way.As for wearing out pretty quick on tarmac, maybe, if you're fat & overweight.
This my second winter on my first set of 1.95 'rakers, probably done about 500-700 miles on them, of which 100 would be on roads, they look like new (i weigh in @ 14.5 stone :(, running about 35 psi). They're by far and away the best UK mud tyres. I love the way they squeeze the mud out like a tube of toothpaste. Great in ruts, due to no edge knobblies (is that the correct term ?).But they do come with a health warning regarding ice and roads
Happy with the MX Comp's, definately need a ETA type lockdown mode, but the Pace's have that to, so all fine.
If you run the 2.3 Survivals, put the one on the rear the same direction as the front, it rolls quicker and doesn't slip out at all only a slight loss in hill climbing grip.
If you ride alot of rocky terrain/for extra comfort, a NBX 2.3XC on the rear clears well and provides more grip in any condition that any tyre I've tried as yet.
Didn't feel slow yesterday, and I hate dragging tyres as I'm lazy and unfit and it just wears me out quicker.
It's the rear anyway that mainly drags, the NBX once it's scrubbed in is surprising fast for it's size and very grippy, good compound and simple pattern.
Came home from work via some very muddy bridleway on some worn spesh Enduro 2.2s (having switched back for a partly onroad ride), and boy did they slip, slide and squirm. Used to be of the opinion that tyres were pretty much the same, that fire XCs were good enough for anything, and any differences would be cancelled out by the variation in conditions, but having ridden the same stuff on two very different tyres, I have changed my mind!
I've got 2.2 Enduro's, love 'em in the summer, don't go near them in the winter. They must be one of the worst tyres ever for riding in mud, they just sit on top of it & slide.
