I'm looking a buying disc brakes as winter is approaching, thinking of something like the hope mono mini. Will have to be secondhand so will depend on what i can get... anyone got anyadvice or recomendations?
Unless you know a good source of second hand then I'd aviod TBH
You could get a pair of Magura Julies new for the price of second hand Hopes and they have a good reputation as do Shimano Deore's which are about £100 a pair new
Don't waste time with anything other than Hope. if you're on a budget, have a look around for some older brakes like the enduro 4 for example. lots of other brakes work but Hope offer customer service that is second to none. No matter how old the brakes are, they always have the spares for them and they're never more than a couple of days away.
As an example, i recently found the brearing seized onto the axel in a 5 year old BULB hub. Sent it back to Hope asking them to remove it (the brering should stay in the shell) they sent me two new bearings and a new axel, no questions asked. Hope make the best brakes but even if they didn't, I'd still use them because of the back up.
I'd get the Shimano LX. I've had 3 sets of Hopes, 1 set of Magura's and 2 Shimano. The Shimano's are the best all rounders I'd say, easiest to fit and bleed and best compromise of feel, modulation and power.
My XT's are great and the LX are virtually identical apart from the pad retention (split pin as opposed to allen bolt).
Don't bother using the resin pads though, they're shit. Sintered all the way.
but hopes are a lot of money the julies on my new GT p155 all over my old style minis in the terms of power and bite they just lack a bit of modulation and look cheap but at the price i wont be swapping them just for the bling factor...
Just bought an 05 hoss with Hayes hydraulic HFX-9 XC disc brakes and levers. Any opinions? Will these need changing? Frankly the last time I bought anything bike related I was just called MonkeyBoy (its been a while) and would say things like "wow, deore V's! Awesome stopping power".
