Just wondering about wear issues with the Hone crankset, are the rings similar to XT?........they look good for the money TBH, heavier than XT but thats not a prob :)
As far as I can tell, Hone, XT and LX all use the same rings. The wear issues really do depend on where you ride and how often (well) you clean your bike. I've used XT rings for the last 6 years with no real issues, however I bought some RaceFace rings (I wanted to run a 26/36 set up and could not get Shimano rings in these sizes) for one of my bikes and am really impressed with how little wear they show. The main thing that would put me off Hone stuff is the fact that it's anodised black. I find black cranks soon look crap due to the anodising rubbing off. I think the LX cranks look like brilliant value for money, I'm about to purchase some as I can't think of reason to buy XT instead.
Buy the lx and then get some middleburn hardcote rings ready. The money you'll save from the hone will go towards them, they never wear out relatively.
Btw, what did you do about the tyre dilemma in the end?? any good??
buy the hone cranks, and budget for replacing the rings immediately. my XT middle was sucking within 200 miles. but i can;t fault the cranks or the bottom bracket
I like the hone myself. Anodising shouldn't rub off due to legs, etc. it's there initially to protect stuff from this, you will just get silver teeth mainly, and the inside will go scratchy silver too, but will only be seen a little bit from the left of the bike. I think the hone is essentially based on the lx. Hope the tyres work out ok. They're quite a clever tread design.
They prob'ly mean it's stronger than the octalink stuff, being selective with the truth, etc. Look on the shimano site at the pic's, they both look the same. Also priced the same too at most places. That's why I recommended the lx as it's the same but can be bought cheaper, and the silver ain't as bad when worn. I would have had the hone if the lx wasn't the cheapest.
well i kinda had the impression that Hone was not as good as XT but stronger and heavier than LX.......my brain sais LX but my heart is saying pretty black Hone! LOL
Need to get one or the other soonish, my crankset is on the way out, convieniently before xmas to ;)
Know that feeling all too well! Built an inbred in april, and went to great pains to make sure all finishing kit was black so my bike was purely black and white, price won over pretty in the end. My steed does look cool(IMO), it is basically pure black and white like a newspaper, but it would be so much better with an all black chainset. Ah well!
