After an justifiable time out of night riding i have just tried to charge my edison 5 with the charger 1.
it recognises the battery correctly as the LiIon, then says error..... then tells me to disconnect.(!)
i tried firing up the light, the yellow and red LEDs come on (ment to be the zero juice warning), the light momentarily flicks on then dies.- only tried this the once -
i left the battery fully charged about 5 months ago, the battery if totally exhausted is meant to result in the charger 1 simply keeping the *ready to connect* command on the screen, not telling me to disconnect.
it is possible that do to various fuses blowing in the house over some time that the batery has had it's charger turned off and on a few times, but there is meant to be a trickle charge safety to stop dammage to the battery.
-is the battery totally discharged but the charger thinks it's full?... sounds bad news
is the battery just bust? (3 years old, pretty big use in times gone by, not recently... sound bad news, i have heard in the past spares are a nightmare
can the battery get over full? and then bust? (it's not leaked).....not good either!
obviously none of this is in the manual
all help gratefully accepted, typical - just when i wanted to get some night rides in to get fit!!
Lithium-ion batteries have some inbuilt safty mechanism whic kicks in if the battery falls below a certain voltage - it sounds like thats what happened to you.
It could be a faulty charger I suppose. Where was the battery stored? Li-ions don't like the cold much either.
It might be an idea (if you're technically minded) to try to at least part charge the battery with a non intelligent charger (find a transformer with the same voltage and a similar or lower current output). It may kick start the battery cells again.
i've tried part charging (really good advice direct from lupine via email - very good service indeed) by sticking the charger probe that goes into the charger 1 directly into the battery connector.........no luck, could be looking at a new battery or new light system if that prohibitatively expensive.... i'm thinking lumicycle HID LiIon... oh dear
Lithium Ion batteries have a life of around 3 years, the clock starts ticking as soon as they leave the factory, which is why it is not a good idea to have one as a spare if you don't need to. Here is a link which tells you how to look after your battery. http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
The repeated part charging has worked! now going for a full charge up!
Must say the LBS has also been great, i've got a halogen lupine nightmare on loan at the mo (!), and have just realised that the LiIon battery it comes with is OK for the edison, in reality i have the loan of an edison 10.......... i feel a monsterously long epic using full beam coming on! hope the weather gets better - got well battered by the wind and rain last night!
thanks for all advice, i appreciate that my lights are perhaps on their last legs, lumicycle wernt out when i got my HID. i reckon i'll be owning one at some point, would be nice to get all the possible use out of the edison 5 though - it cost a fortune!
