I'm currently running Mavic 317 rims but like using 2.1 or fatter tyres. Would getting wider rims make a big difference in performance, or should I use my money for something else?
im using D521 at the front which is the same with and im running 2.3"'s on it, id save the money till there is something wrong with your wheel, as assuming you can't build wheels you will have to pay someone to build the wheel and more than likely pay for new spokes as well as the cost of the rim! Thats my advice anyway!
I agree that a wider rim is a good idea with a wider tyre but wide tyres don't roll off narrow rims. They don't feel as stable but they don't roll off.
A 2.5 tyre on a 20mm rim with about 7psi is the only way of making forward progress on soft snow. You'd think it would pinch flat but on snow it doesn't.
I did one snow ride last year. I've no idea how much air I let out to be able to ride on it but all hell broke loose when the wheels hit non-snowy Tarmac ;-)
I've become an expert on riding in snow since over here in freeeezing Germany we've had snow since December that's just refused to go away. I just run my tires at 40psi same as in the summer and this year at least haven't come a cropper yet!! Powder snow is much like loamy condtions there is an intial slide and the tire bites as the snow pushes up into a bermlet and great fun to ride.
?? Daftpunk. Real powder snow comes over my ankles on skis and I'm sure I'd just lose the bike in it. Even on hard icy snow I only put about 20psi in the Nokian spikes, more and not enough of the studs bite. At 40psi tyres just dig in on soft snow. Try dropping the pressure.
