Well im picking up the new bike on tuesday the giant xtc lx,But the the bloke in the shop said he has to set the forks up for me what is that all about ? what does this involve ? Do you have to set them up every time you go out on it,Any addvice on these forks and how to set them up would be great cheers all.
set 'em up once, then check them once every now and then
if they're the air forks, it involved putting the right pressure in so the forks sag at 30% of their travel to track the ground
the 318's also have motion control which is adjustable on the fly, so you can do that whenever you want. It just locks the fork out, which makes climbing a lot easier.
there's also rebound damping, which is just turning a knob on the bottom of the right leg, you want them pretty fast, but yuo don't want to have the forks coming straight back up after a bump, as if you do a big drop, they'll buck you off
so air - how stiff they feel motion control - locks the forks out rebound - the speed of rebound
I personally find the rebound spot-on out of the box with RS forks, same with compression damping. The air if they are air forks will need topping up regularly, but is only one valve on top of the forks and is a piece of piss, once you've found the pressure that works best for you, just keep them at that. And yes, I would imagine it's the air pressure he wants to set, or ensuring the correct spring if coil. The other two can only really be done by you when riding to alter how they feel if required, not something that a shop can predict really.
