Hi- I`ve been communting along the canal on my mtb- with 2.6 inch tyres and they`re sooo slooow- fine for XC but not for the ride in to work. I`d be very grateful for advice on the thinnest tyres I can get away with, but I don`t want slicks, as that`s what my hybrid has.

Ta v much !

Conti Cross Country 1.5", they're light and fast, but they're pretty crap tyres!

I'm using 1.25" Panaracer Pasellas (sp?) at the moment but the canal path I ride has been surfaced. In the winter I was using 1.5" Michelins (I forget what tyre) with a deep tread pattern.

I used spesh crossroads 1.95" (~£15 a pop) which have a raised central section for smoother rolling, and nobs to the sides. They're fine on hardpack and most surfaces other than deep mud where the narrow spacing between nobs means they clog up easily.

Been using Conti 1.5 for years. They are light and fast and great for clearing mud. Only crap if you weigh a lot so ideal for lightweights.

I dunno. They're always touted as a great mud tyre, but I think they're rubbish! They do cut through the mud, but there's no grip!

I'd have thought they'd be good on canal type paths though, as they are quick. Or Panaracer Fire XC Pro 1.8s, they'll be pretty fast.

Try the Kenda Short Tracker. It is expensive though.

I'm using Conti Contact Sports 26 x 1.3 Very thin and very fast with good puncture protection. They are no use in the mud but I ride a mixed route everyday of offroad, tarmac and canal and they are by far the quickest tyre I've used and have only punctured once in the last 6 months.

I use Specialize Pro just over 1" and very fast with 100psi pressure. Small amount of tread on the edge, but not sure how they will perform on a canal path, depends how muddy it gets i guess? Pretty good puncture protection as long as you keep pressure up.

go for 1.5 at least, otherwise you might sacrafice comfort. I use low rolling resistance Hutchinsons (Python 2.0 and Bulldog 2.1), and some Maxxis Wormdrive 1.9ish, (maybe discotinued), quick semi slicks, maybe going cheap online.
