am looking to upgrade my MX comp forks and have considered a no.of Rockshox forks getting excellent reviews/feedback. I was heading towards either the Recon solo air 100mm or Reba SL air 100mm but also quire like the Recon/Revelation U-turn coil forks. My budget is c. 250 quid and whilst the appeal of U-turn is there, the most important thing for me is plushness. Will a coil sprung version be more plush than an air one or is there little in it ?
Just to veer on a different tack. Should I keep looking at Rockshox or keep Marzocchi in mind ? The XC500 is in my price range. As I said earlier plushness is my main goal I also need some type of lockout which is the main problem with the MX Comps.
I`m pretty sure I`ll get the coil U-turn Revelations. I think the only difference between these & the Recon u-turns is the adjustable floodgate (?) and lower weight. I`ll trade the weight advantage of the air Rebas for plushness of the coil Revs, plus I think the Revs will be lighter than my MX comps anyway.
I ordered some recon u turns the other day therefore I have just been looking at the spring charts. The difference in spring relative to the weight of the rider has very narrow margins
eg. 140-160 red spring 160-180 blue
these margins are aprow 1.5 stone difference and the hardest spring stops at 12 stone.
Im 6ft 7 and weigh 16.5 stone ok maybe 17 :) but will the hardest spring be suitable? and that would also mean i would have to purchase qnother spring :( :(
I'd have a word with TF Tunded Shox about spring ratings. The RS guide is a guide, but TF will have a good idea of what works for what weight based on experience. Nice people who know their stuff and sell RS bits as well as servicing them.
I had 06 MX Comp ETA's ( still have on spare bike ) and there is no contest the Reba SL Dual Air wipes the floor of the MX Comp totally, makes the MX Comp feel like a RST.
I'm outside the weight range for putting the Pike Coil + Uturn assembly in there sadly ( 29" fork so it fits )
Coils aren't a exact science though, depends on how you ride, 11stone mate gets more travel in a street bounce test and in use on my forks and I'm 16stone, he does the same to other bikes to.
Perhaps it's horses for courses. Just sticking to 100mm travel examples:
A coil Marz Dirt Jumper (coil) joggles along trails but even a 49kg friend was getting 90mm travel on the BMX track last week. The Dirt Jumper is the perfect undercarriage for a jump jet.
Then there's the Reba (air). Buttery smooth, excellent tracking but it shoots through its travel on bigger obstacles - clung.
The Marz Corsa (air) doesn't impress initially but pick up speed and go flying into a rough section and all the travel is there, well controlled too.
