ok, poor battery life, a tad large maybe and not as robust as some but i think its feckin cheap considering its a full on car sat nav too, and comes with memory map national parks. if, as i do you allready have memory map the unit can be bought without for under 200 notes and all the maps you may have on your pc can be downloaded onto a sd card.
External battery pack for use with Lithium batteries (up to 7 times longer life than Alkaline - 2 included in the pack). This battery pack uses disposable batteries - so you can keep topping up as often as you like!
One set of 2 lithium batteries will give you 3 hours of extra life from a flat battery on your Navigator 7000 (with a full backlight and powered always). Or you can fully charge your unit once from flat (with the unit switched off). Comes packed with mini-USB and Motorola phone connectors. £22.94 inc. VAT + P&P
looks like they thought it was a problem to. i really like the idea of this but cant help but think it would look a little silly and be rather venerable......
A friend of mine just ordered one too and we're off to the Lakes to test it this weekend. If i like it i might have to get one. Road Angel's routing in car is meant to be a bit poor though.
Ive got one of these and its best feature is seeing where you are on the map, but i have had problems with it. On a long epic recently it stopped working - must have got damp in the inside and the GPS couldnt pick up a signal - no use when you dont know where you are! (Sent back to RA and they found no fault- insides must have dried in the post). The software is pretty poor too the start up screens have to be scrolled through every time you switch the device on and the maps do not orient to your direction of travel which is annoying. Overall its a worthwhile toy but i expected more of this device - looking forward to some updated software to make it more user friendly.
did a ride around the peaks yesterday using the road angel, have to say im very happy with it. how i used it battery life was no where near a problem i kept the device on stand by in my pocket (38 hrs battery life iirc) and just looked at it when i was unsure of the route to take. using it like this i didnt use the "follow route" option which is like a garmin gps where an arrow is displayed on screen, i simple followed the red dot around the route i had down loaded.
having a proper os map on the screen in front of me is great and what ive been searching for for a while. i always know exactly where i am and no more wondering where that trail that wanders off into the woods goes..
if you've got a mobile phone that runs the symbian S60 operating system, nokia N-series etc try this
http://www.viewranger.com/
just downloaded ALL the national park landranger maps (1:25,000) for £25
you can look at the maps in a manual mode or if you have a bluetooth gps unit you can let it do all the hard work for you...never had any problem with battery life 5 - 6 hour no problem.
only limitation is the size of the screen, no substitute for rolling out the whole map..
Yeah I use that too Pie, nice to just ride off in a general direction then check the map for bridleways where you are etc.
Just trying out the function where you can tag a photo with your position, then upload it to the server which then displays it on a Windows live maps.....pretty neat!
"Also, can it be used to track a route whilst out on a ride, so that you could store the route and follow it again at a later date?"
im still trying to suss that one out, ive not used the unit like a gps yet (with an arrow showing which direction to go in) ive been viewing the screen with the os map on and my location, when used like this a red trail is left showing where you have been but it doesnt follow the route of the trail very well, cutting corners and looking very angular.
i will try it this weekend and use it like a gps and see if that makes any difference.
the funny thing with the navigator is that no where does it mention that in can be used with memory map, not on the box nor in the instructions, i think they want us all to splash out the extra on the adventurer where its compatability with memory map is plastered all over the box...
