Visited my ( fairly ) LBS today just for a browse ....... 5 mins later I was trying bikes on the road outside and within 10mins the deal was done.
I've decide to buy a commuter bike ( my 2 spesh bikes ( hard rock and enduro ) just aint fast enough ) the one ive bought is amazing , you can pick it up with your little finger .
Just a mention for the shop, a workers c0-op , it's the best shopping experience ive had, highly recommended.
Got the 2007 7.5 FX with Avid BB5's- really like it. Lots of fun and great in traffic. I've recently put a pair of Cane Creek ergo bar ends on mine - they give a really comfy cruising position - highly recommended upgrade.
First week report .... BIG culture shock, I've been spoilt with sus bikes over recent years and this 'sport hybrid' has given my fillings a good going over.
I've found myself using a totally different riding style and attitude on the road.
When riding my MTB's through traffic I would stick to the kerb and if I came up against any blockage I would hop up on the kerb edge and ride around it, now with 700mm x 32 mm wheels I doubt if they will take that style of riding.
SO, I'm now riding well away from the kerb and doing lots of hand signalling , getting cars to stop and making it clear that I'm there and that I'm not going to be pushed into the gutter.
As for the bike, its handling great, will deff get the bar ends and ive also added these ;
I got a speccy allez and it still gets me that it takes a little more care to hop up and down kerbs that I would on the previous commuter (P1 jump bike!). Still its quite fun CX stylee spud hopping up kerbs and the such to get round arses parked in the gutter.
