Looking at a couple of second hand bikes around the £500.  I’m not too sure about the difference in specs available, but I think either of these two would be good.  Can I please have your opions.

Can I be first to laugh at "second hand bile"?

Of those two I'd say the Kinesis spec is better. The slicks suggest it might also have had an easier life.

Kinesis has better kit and geometry (IMO). I've had two Scott racing hardtails and they are stiff as F with a very low feel a la 1994 race whippet.

Depends if you like a 'racing' or more 'upright' feel.

If it was my cash, it'd be on the maxlight.

Is it just me or is that Scott showing way too much 'post??

BTW - Kinesis.

The Kineses it is then.  Is the £500 a fair price for the bike.  I've never bought a 2nd hand bike, but I need some wheels for the Helly Hanson challenge in a pair of weeks.

£500 is a fair price if it's in very good condition but if your gonna need new chain/cassette, brake pads, etc, then I'd get some more off. Also if the bikes been up for sale for a while I'd haggle -- actually, I'd haggle anyway! There are some absolutely stunning bargains now on E-bay, BM, etc, as the new season bikes are out.

Why do you need new wheels? The Speedisc are decent. Do you mean new offroad tyres as this has slicks fitted?

Have you seen the bike, is it local to you or are you just gonna be buying blind?

Bikes not local so I'll be buying blind, what bargains have you seen on ebay?

Needs to be within 75 miles of southampton or have postage.

Here's one for starters. Ends in 35 mins and should go for less than £500, though maybe a little big for you as it's  a 19"

I don't wanna put you off but with £500 quid in your pocket, the second-hand bike market is your oyster! If you have time to wait, I'd seriously think about whether you want full-suss/hardtail and whether your gonna be doing rough off-roading or just blasting through your local woods, etc a few times a week then pick a bike that's low-price and suited to your needs. If it's burning a whole in your pocket then the Kinesis looks like a good bike as-long as it's in good condition.

At work at the moment and can't get on ebay, looking for a hardtail that I can take rough off roading.  I got the bug on a weeks exped to the lakes and loved the scary stuff.  Sounds as if I'm a bit off kilter but loved the up hill hard sloggs and that burning in the thighs.

Make full use of the search facilities on E-bay and you'll find there are some loveley bikes ending very soon in your area. Among them are a nice Rockhopper Disc, an On-One framed hardcore bike (sounds just what your looking for) and a few others. Don't forget about buying new aswell. Check out the bike shop links on the left hand of the BM homepage for last years (2008) bikes.
