XTC frame, 2009 R7 Super Absolute forks (100mm), Titec Hellbent Prolite seatpost & Pluto Prolite stem, Ritchey WCS Flat handlebar with Ritchey WCS Stubby bar ends, Mavic XM 317 Rims on Deore Hubs, XT Rear mech, LX front mech, LX shifters, Giant MPH3 hydro disc brakes, Cateye micro wireless computer, Shimano M520 spd's, Cane creek headset, Truvativ cranks/chain rings & bb, Shimano 9 speed cassette, Selle Italia Filante saddle. Pictured on Kenda Tyres but since replaced with old school Onza Porc Kevlar tyres for weight reduction and better winter mud traction. Also cheap at £9.99 for 3 on ebay and the rubber is still in excellent condition. Bargain!
Haven't had it on scales but XTC SX was said to be 13kg new so with all the new bits it should be a fraction over 11kg now. The new forks are awesome and really make the bike come alive. Just need to replace that Truvativ chainset and I'll be really happy!
a size L, weighs in at 11.5kg (25.3lb) even if i shelled out £600 for some Crossmax SLR's (which i would never do) only drops it to 11.2kg/24.7lb. still, new brakes arriving soon with a .2kg loss straight away
mine's a size medium. I've got a good pair of electric kitchen scales so I've weighed the old bits and the new bits. I have a spreadsheet but it's on another computer (yes I know it's very sad) but if I get a chance I'll post the weight savings on here later!
I took the 13kg starting weight from a review of the XTC SX in bike radar.
However that review was based on a size large bike so the medium should be a little less than that to start with.
The biggest weight savings were the R7 fork which saved over 600g and the tyres (around 400g the pair) so there's over 1kg alone.
Mike: Unfortunately the big money for Onza Porcs only seems to be for the white tyres, mine are the black kevlar ones. Still, I got them as they were cheap and was hoping they would be better than the Kendas the bike came with which they were. Certainly on wet sand/mud etc on a filthy ride yesterday.
WTB Saddle 380g - Selle Italia Filante 195g (- 195g)
Ritchey WCS Bar Ends 65g (+ 65g)
Giant Comp Riser Bar 367g - Ritchey WCS Flat Bar 134g (-233g)
Giant Comp 270mm Seat Post 333g - Titec Duke Prolite 350mm 237 g (- 96g)
Giant Grips 90g - Ritchey WCS Grips 30g (-60g)
Manitou Splice Super 70-100mm Forks 2114g - 09 Manitou R7 Super Absolute 100mm Fork 1500g (est) 1544g before steerer was cut by 70mm. Fork fitted by shop so unable to weigh since steerer tube cut hence estimated weight of 1500g (-614 g)
Kenda Blue Groove 2.1 Tyre 832g - Porcupine 2.1 Kevlar Tyre 577grms (-255g)
Kenda Nevegal 2.1 Tyre 765g - Porcupine 2.1 Kevlar Tyre 601grms (-164g)
Total weight saved to date:
1583g (3.5 lbs)
Original bike weight 28 lbs (approx) Based on size Large and figure taken from Giant XTC SX review in Bike Radar where 28 lbs was the stated weight. Mine is a medium so should be a little under the 28 lbs starting weight.
Current bike weight 11.1 kg or 24.5 lbs (approx) Should be slightly under due to medium frame size.
How do you figure that Trevor? Bike Radar stated the Weight for a size large XTC SX was 28 lbs. I guess they used that as they actually weight the bikes they review! Mine's a medium so will be slightly less to start with but I've used the 28lbs as an estimated original figure so I'm being conservative here. All the new parts have been weighed as have the bits taken off so the above figures are accurate. The scales used to weigh the parts are expensive digital scales accurate to less that 1/2 a gram.
The combined weight saving on the new parts is exactly 1583g or 3.5 lbs 28-3.5 =24.5 lbs. It's not rocket science. The only part I estimate the weight of is the forks. I weighed them new at 1544g. Since then the steerer tube has been cut down by 70mm. A 10mm spacer weighs 10g (1g per mm) so if anything reducing the weight of the forks by 44g for a 70mm reduction is if anything a little conservative! Either way 44g doesn't make the difference between 24.5 lbs and your estimate of 26-27.
Wii Fit owners, weigh youself holding the bike then again without the bike. The difference is the weight of your bike to the nearest 0.5lb.
Not very accurate, but it really pisses the missus off when you bring the bike into the living room! Works with the digital bathroom scales too and results in equally irate other half!
Like I said my scales are very expensive and when talking expensive scales 1/2 gram here or there is a lot. They're easy to calibrate as well. You just stick a weight on them and if they say it's the same as the weight then they're accurate. The weights in question are used by jewellery shops for weighing diamonds, gold etc so they're accurate. If not the shop can lose a hell of a lot of money so they trust the calibrating weights are spot on. One other simple way is to use a 2 pence piece. They are exactly 7g no more, no less just 7g every time or 3.5g for a 1p piece if you don't have calibrating weights.
The Titec stuff i.e Seatpost & Stem may be relatively budget compared to Thompson but it's still very light kit. Thompson stuff actually isn't the lightest stuff around but it is very stiff and strong. 2009 R7 forks are just about the lightest XC fork on the market, they're certainly not budget kit, nor is Ritchey WCS kit.
No, I can't be sure Bike Radar weighed the bike but then they don't quote weight for everything they review so there's a good chance they do for the stuff they do quote! In any case I did state that my weights were an approx, not fact and I'm using their figure for a size large not a medium like mine so again I'm trying to be conservative here. I'll try and get the bike weighed in it's current assembled form but it's a bit too big for my digital scales!
Ok my rims aren't XC 717's but they're supposed to be 395g each and the same site states my XM 317's are 445 each so that's only 100g over just about the lightest XC rim around.
The XTC1 still has fairly heavy Giant components, the same deore hubs, xt rear mech, lx front mech etc. The XM 117 rims are virtually the same weight as the 317's on mine and my forks are a lot lighter than the RockShox fork fitted on the XTC1 so in a word yes I believe mine could be lighter or very similar. Look at sprokitt's bike above. He states his is 25.3 lbs and it's a size Large.
But I get what you're saying, quoted manufacturers weights are to be taken with a pinch of salt. My WCS bar was advertised as 125 and weighed 134, my Onza Porcs 560g but mine were 601g & 577g (not even the same weight for supposesedly the same product).
Like I've said my overal bike weight is an approx but I think 27 is certainly too high. I suspect 25-26 is the ballpark!
Hi Licko 77, unfortunately I don't have a Wii or any bathroom scales. My bike does however reside in the living room all the time at the moment as the garage door is broken and as such can't be locked.
That said my Mrs loves the smell of WD40 so I just spray a bit here and there after washing the bike and that seems to keep her happy
"Like I said my scales are very expensive and when talking expensive scales"
My bad, but you did describe them as "Kitchen scales", which is a long way from Jewelers Scales.
I spent 3 months laboriusly learning about measurement, measurement theory, calibration and accuracy during my engineering degree, it was really, really tedious boring shit. But even bore that I knew that weighing the whole is always better than summing its parts.
395g for an XC717 Disc, as you say, Stan's ZTR 355s c370g, Olympics c340g, ZTR Race <300g, ZTR Race 7000 282-291g.
Nowt special about 717s, decidedly heavy these days.
I think that's a feasible weight, although the wheels are still bloody heavy. The fork is light, and that'll make a big difference. Eithey way, it's still at least 2lbs heavier than my Epic
'I've got a good pair of electric kitchen scales so I've weighed the old bits and the new bits. I have a spreadsheet but it's on another computer (yes I know it's very sad)'
LOL same here
1614g for bare frame, its an alu front/carbon rear hybrid mix.
1698g for reba WC, inc poploc & expander bolt
my project was a new build so most of the components got weighed prior to fitting. i say most cause i can't find any figures for cables and grips. totting up using the digital kitchen scale method equalled 11037g (24.3lb) yet when i hung the complete bike on my mates digital fish scales the result came to 25.3lb, so 1lb for cables and grips??
i'm being too picky, cause i love the bike and it still rides sweet no matter where those 400 grams went and when it gets cacked up with 4lbs of mud those figures become pretty pointless anyway
