Apple announced official development APIs for GPS location awareness and mapping yesterday so it won't be long before there's a dozen SatMap clones on the AppStore for your iPhone if SatMap don't get there first. In-application purchasing was added too so you could buy the app then buy individual routes too.

There's too many buttons on the Active-10 for the Jobsian Hordes.

I imagine there's at least a dozen developers that downloaded the SDK this morning and will have prototypes out by the end of the week. I did.

But know one  is going to attach an iphone to the handlebars of a mountain bike and ride it down a wet welsh mountain.

I wouldn't do that with an Active-10 either!

It appears there's GPS software already - http://itrailr.googlepages.com/

The problem with the current iphone gps trail apps is that they have to run constantly in the foreground and drain the battery within a couple of hours.

Yep, Apple didn't fix that yesterday - still no background apps.

You could of course just stick it in a bag and take it out when you need it. ie. when lost.

Garmin Edge? No, I tend to use large phallic protuberances built on hilltops by Victorians celebrating wars to navigate by. If I can see one, I'm about 3 miles from home*

* ish. I'm guessing as I gave up bike computers about a decade ago.
