Hi Peeps,

I'm looking at joining the modern age and getting a GPS unit for bike. Predominently used for off road, but it will be used on road every now and again.

I've been looking at the SatMap Active 10 Plus and the Edge 705. I like the idea of all the training data on the Edge, but am I right in saying that it doesn't come with OS maps? Does this mean I will have to buy something like Memory Map or Quo?

I also read that the maps you buy from these guys can't be uploaded onto the units; not to sound stupid, but what's the point of buying the maps in the first place then? Do I have to have a map load on my unit AND buy maps to plan a route then transfer it across?

Although I prefer the look and spec of the Edge, I'm quite prepared to buy the SatMap and a bike computer if it's going to to be easier to use and disect my rides after, not to mention cheaper overall.

So in short; HELP, what does all this mean!?

Maps aren't quaint, EVER. Unless they have pretty flowers all around the outside.

Maps are for men, GPS's and the like are for 'modern' man.  Unless you are navigating in a whiteout or cloud at ground level on a featureless plain, you don't need 'em.

Don't get me wrong, I like maps; sometimes I can even use one properly, but I do hate having to carry two around if I'm on the edge of a region.

I tend to use 1:25K for detail off road. They take up room I don't have and quite frankly I fancy the lazy modern method of being spoon fed directions.

Unfortunately I have no idea where to start and from what I read it seems they may actually be hassle than they are worth.

or backwards if they are upside down.
