Rebuilding XTR thumbshifters...
Possible, Difficult or plain foolhardy?

I'm completely gutting my bike...I've managed to take apart, clean, regrease and rebuild my XTR rear mech and put new jockeys on it, now it's smooth as silk.

I had hoped to rebuild my shifters but Imagine this is alot more taxing, anybody done it?

I take it you are talking about Rapidfire units not the retro fav BHB? If so all you can really do is take the cover off and see the workings after that it gets way complicated, little screws and springs on the ratchet, best left alone just a light spray of favourite light lube and the put the cover back on. Best of luck BHB if you do decide to tackle it.  I tried and failed with an XT rear shifter years ago

Yeah it's the new rapid fire ones...(how I would dearly dearly love some old scholl XT thumbies).

I figured there would be some very complicated springs, I just wanted to give them a really deep clean to get them nice and smooth again.

I let you know if some springs jump out in my face when I pop the cover!

Are they playing up, or do you just want to fiddle with something?

I tried and failed with a SRAM shifter last year, I couldn't get it back together athough I have since found a guide to rebuilding it. I wouldn't be a happy bunny if I screwed up my XTRs.

Good luck with that Billy!

Google search doesn't come up with a guide at all sorry BHB.

Springs shouldn't pop out at you (he says fingers crossed)

Just remember the cost to replace if you do stuff them up

Shimano have a special tool for this job.

Are you sure that's not the Pedros FBH?

Maybe, according to Shimano you use it either to bash your own skull in for even considering such a task or to break into your LBS and steal some new shifters.

I'd like to see anyone get into my LBS with that

Ok removed the screws it's quite gritty inside but f*cking no way am I going any further than rinsing it through with some wd-40 and then putting some more grease in.

They are playing up a wee bit...feeling very 'gritty' when shifting that's all

Well, if you're feeling flush you could always buy these:

XT Thumbies

No way will they go for the asking price. And if they do, I'll be selling mine

Yeah I thought they were a little overpriced! - I know they're collectable and everything but I thought more around the £30-40 mark?

Someone might be mad enough to buy them at that price, I'm with Mike if they sell for that price then fleabay here we come LOL
