The clocks have changed, it's dark outside and I've more excuses than ever before not to go for a ride in the evening.

When the weather is really crap I find it much easier to get out there when I've made an arrangement to meet other people.

Help me stay motivated by joining me on a group ride from Hope(*) at 19:00hrs this Thursday and as many other Thursdays as possible this Winter. I'm thinking two hours of moderate paced riding, with the proviso that "no-one gets left behind", after all - it's a group ride.

So don't worry about your fitness levels - we can all improve together.

* Or Calver, Curbar, Hayfield, Fox-House etc.

when my lights arrive I might be tempted to join you Derek.

. . . As long as you promise not to overtake me on your singlespeed on the way up mam tor again?!

Hi Derek, long time no see. I thought you'd been eaten by Rapha tigers

Anyway, I'd be delighted to join you on Thursday, but I may have a vague prior engagement, so it may have to be the week after. I'll be riding all winter anyway, it's the rules, but always nice to have some company. How's things? Been eventing?

Oh, I've learned to be sociable and modest paced btw no, really. I have.

Dan - I've got a set of HIDs you can borrow for as long as you want. They have, erm... charging issues - but I can l explain 'the knack' to you. And don't worry, I'm not overtaking anything at the moment!

Jon - Dozens of events. I even had a very poor stab at the Brownbacks job in Lea Quarry. It's changed my mind about 'short course' events and I'm planning on doing a few more of them. In the meantime I'm just trying to single-speed my way back from a nasty dose of Swine Flu :/

Derek, that's very kind of you. .

I don't drive so would have to either get the train to Hope or meet you somewhere within 'my riding distance' i.e. Fox House.

I think my commuter lights could just about see me to Fox House on the road if I could take you up on your offer of borrowing lights, once I got there (or Hope etc)!?

I have some of those cheapy deal extreme p7-based lights on order but they take a while I gather . . .

Nice, I like Lee Quarry, did a couple of the first series rounds, erm, on my pukka 30lb Pace RC405 race bike, which amusingly was fast enough to get top ten in Weekend Warrior - the Maverick was deemed 'too ugly to be allowed in the house'. Hmmmph... Good races, didn't make any of the Series 2 rounds though.

Anyway, if I'm around Thursday, I'll be out, so just post when you have a definite plan/venue etc.

Hi Derek

I'm up for Thursday rides .... in priniciple... as Juan knows I've been a bit random lately and failed to make a couple of evening rides (work commitments). After this week I should be a bit more reliable.

Dan - I can easily meet you at Fox House. Which way do you come out of Sheffield?

Hi Derek -  I normally come out ( following the porter brook out of Sheffield, through Endcliffe and Bingam park, forge Dam, clough lane) up onto Fulwood Lane, then turning right onto Ringinglow road.

If that makes sense?

Dan - Yeah, I know that route. How long does it take to get to Fox House going that way?

To be honest it's quite a while since I last rode it - I guess for my er.. moderate pace, it'd be an hour's ride from my door to Fox house.

I'm a little worried about these 'ere rides...  I've not ridden any distance regularly for months. I'm currently doing my 5 mile a day commute and that's it.

I don't want to hold you all back

Don't worry about holding anyone back. I'm sure everyone will wait at the top (and bottom) of climbs and descents to re-group. For me this isn't about speed, it's just about getting out regularly on a Thursday during the winter.

Sounds good.  I'm currently re-learning to ride a hardtail again so have no speed up nor down hill at the moment!

I'll definately give Thursdays a go in the coming weeks, I need to get back in the habit of winter Peak night riding.

Me, Derek, Jon and Dan sounds like a start... any more lurkers out there?

Dan, what time do you want picking up at Fox House on Thursday?

Hi Derek, sorry to be a pain but I just need to check that I can definately, definately make it on Thursday...

I need to talk to "she who must be obeyed" but she's away until tomorrow.

I'll give her a call tonight and let you know. If for any reason I can't make this week I'll definately be up for the following weeks.

thanks

OK. No worries.

Right, I can't make this week, but the rest of the winter is well and truly entered as a repeating event on iCal, so I'll see you next week. Derek, have you thought of banging something up on, erm, STW? I have a vague feeling there was someone in Sheffield looking for a regular night ride recently and, to be fair, it's a very busy forum

iCal? Is that some sort of calorie counter thing? I guess a diet is long overdue eh?

I shall be out from Thursday 12th onwards. I've scratched a reminder on a piece of stone and propped it up in the corner of my cave, next to the singlespeed.

A note up on STW could be worth a try.

I am mildly wetting myself (if that's possible).

Until recently I was riding a 35lb Foes FXR; that should give you an indication of a) my fitness and b) my inclination towards hills.

Are you guys all on ultra light singlespeeds with drilled rims?
