I like my biopace chainrings thank you very much... They finish the 1989 Specialized they came on very nicely. They feel a bit weird at very low cadence (Think knees exploding territory), but since they're optimised for medium to high cadence this matters very little. Front derailleur shifting is the only real downside to them, but it's not bad on a thumb shifter ... A shite ton of time triallists are using off round chainrings these days again, but with the biggest diameter 90 degrees or so offset from where the biopace rings were. Here's where it's at for modified pedalling though - one crank passes TDC by the time the second hits BDC, so no dead spot: http://www.rotorbikeusa.com/RS4x_cranks.html - I would love a go on a set of these...

Had biospace myself for a number of years, and didn't have any issues at all with them.

Those silly looking cow horn bars that tri athletes use, with no brakes.

Those silly platic reflectors on wheels

Those power strap things that came between toestraps and SPD,s. These are a cracking idea for those that want the advantage of SPDs without either the expense or the feeling that they're too strapped into the bike (no spinng your foot sideways to get out). I would include mud guards for off road bikes (if that counts as an invention).

I don't wonder why any of those things were invented. I wonder why people bought them though.
