I always rode to work (note past tense as I've recently given up my job) come rain, thunder, sleet, snow (not that we ever got it that often in, London) or shine.
Only a sixteen mile round trip though. A decent set of waterproofs are obviously essential, (I have a pair of Pearl Izumi Allegro trousers, and a race face jacket).
I'd say it's worth spending some money on them, as the more expensive materials don't leave you sweating like a pregnant nun, unless of course you're a fatty :-)
The only downside being that when caught in the occasional downpour I'd usually end up buying new trainers to wear at work while I hoped that my cycling shoes would dry out by the end of my shift.
On the positive, there's nothing quite as enjoyable as hearing the frost crack under rubber in the early morning. Or overtaking roadies on one of the climbs (admitedly only 250 feet).
