Crank Brothers launch Acid pedal

We've seen these before, but now we know what they're called and how much they cost

We brought you a sneak peak of Crank Brothers's new "mid-platform" pedal the other week, and now some further pertinent details have emerged. Which is handy, as before we only knew what was obvious from looking at them - they fit betwen the bijou Candy and chunky Mallet pedals and the posh ones have carbon fibre bits on.

The useful stuff is as follows. The new pedal is called the Acid, and will come in two versions. The Acid 1 will feature an aluminium and nylon composite body, will be available in green or grey, weighs 395g/pr and will cost £84.99. The Acid 2 will have a body of magnesium and carbon fibre and will presumably cost a bit less than 395g/pr although that seems to be one piece of information that we lack. Anyway, clearly it'll be lighter, and naturally it's more expensive - £154.99.

Both versions will be available to shops through Crank Brothers's UK distributor 2Pure (www.2pure.co.uk).

... all along!

Rollox, when I got me Mallets I thought they were overkill but the Candy's were'nt enough :-(

Can't justify another 85 bazzers!!!!

I dont get how these work. You clip in like normal spd's. But you have a platform, for what?

I cant get away with clips as it freaks me out on technical stuff. Even if your standing on the platform on these pedals, your still clipped in arent you?

No, thats the point , you don't have to be clipped in with the Mallets and these new jobbies. Its just an extra bit of platform which you don't necessarily have to be clipped into if the going gets rough, you just move the position of your feet a little so as you're not clipped in. That way you still have the benefits of a clipless system.
Personally though, I prefer to be clipped in over rough stuff these days as I find my feet just wander off the pedals otherwise, I've never had a problem with them disengaging either when I've been thrown over the bars, which is quite often as you found out ;-)

As for the Candy's its simply for a little bit of extra stability/support.

Hmmm, but isnt the best position for your foot the position where you are engaged in the clip. Means yer not in the correct position if you are using them, like i would, not clippd in.

I know i am mentally retarded when it comes to clippless but it aint gonna change. I thought these may be a compromise.

You're right, they are a compromise and the optimum position is where the clip lies but you only have to move your feet a tiny amount in any direction so as to not be clipped in.
I like em' and a guy I ride with uses the Mallets for the same reasons, ie you can be unclipped if it all gets a bit hairy for ya.

I like the look of these new ones as the Mallet platform is huge!
Posted: 18/07/2006 09:34

Cant see the point. If you ride the gnarly stuff clipped in, you arent using the platform anyhow. I suppose its to give a bit of support but then isnt that why clipless shoes have fancy carbon soles etc to support the foot.

Save yer money man. Your wife told me you have spent too much lately.

Everything has to be black & white with you Hobo, no compromise eh? I admire your style ;-)

155 quid for pedals? + cleats made of cheese. Bargain.

Bloody Cynic.

;)

Can't justify another 85 bazzers!!!!

You know 85 Barrys?

Good Lord!

Beat me to the cheesy cleat comment Shaun :)

After I bought the candy's I was falling off 2-3 times a ride as I couldn't get my feet unclipped.

Knocked the fear of falling off out of me though!

Bought a pair of the premium cleats the other day. Shop at the NPS downhill were selling them.
Should be interesting to see how long they last.
Posted: 18/07/2006 16:39

...Or how long your pedals last since you're now rubbing them with something harder than cheese.

(Apologies if that sounds mildly perverse)
Posted: 18/07/2006 17:02

For 155 sheets they should be made out of platinum. May as well just get your butler to ride with you and swap bikes when you need it.

Had the old DX SPD/flat hybrids, never got on with them, slippery as hell with a cleat on your foot when not clipped in, cant see how these would be different.
Posted: 18/07/2006 22:51

Starsky i had the same problem with the candys.
Posted: 19/07/2006 00:07

i used to have mallets and fell off a lot i now use flatties with vicious pins - these demand a blood sacrifice every so often but hurt way less than the clipless injuries i sustained. horses for courses i guess.
one scary moment i had with mallets was unclipping for a small jump with a dodgy landing then just as i landed i felt my feet slip forwards and clip in - just when i needed them unclipped - that was the final straw for me, i splashed on a set of flatties and flogged the mallets. now i've got the technique down for keeping my feet on the pedals during jumps and bunny hops i don;t feel i'm mising anything from having my feet strapped to the pedals and i have instant control over foot position etc.

Platform clipless pedals aren't really designed to be ridden extensively not clipped in. It's just a bigger target to hit if you're unclipping/clipping in a lot (and there's something useful there to push on if you don't clip in first time), and provides better support if you use soft shoes.

Yeh I know.
Posted: 19/07/2006 11:14

Thats what i thought mike. To be frank a person who is scared of riding (Yes i admit it) clipless is still not gonna benefit using these. They are more for people that like clipless but want a bit of extra support on techy stuff.
