GT 2008: Part 2

It's a carbon fibre frenzy in GT's XC portfolio

Marathon adds a carbon swingarm to the '07 iDrive XC front end

Following on from our look at GT's 2008 all-mountain Force and Sanction bikes, here's a couple of new things for the more wheels-on-ground amongst us. And first up is a real corker - the all-new carbon fibre Zaskar. The Zaskar is something of an iconic bike - the original aluminium model pretty much kickstarted the whole heavy-duty hardtail thing in the UK. This latest incarnation, though, is all about XC.

It would have been easy for GT to wheel out a me-too carbon race frame, but clearly too easy. Instead it's gone to a lot of trouble to replicate its trademark Triple Triangle frame design in the magic blanket stuff. And it looks fantastic. The frame comes in at 1.2kg (2.64lb), which isn't the lightest carbon frame out there but is certainly competitive. Pictured is the all-XTR Team model (complete with black-on-black decals) - there'll also be a Pro, which, in a thoughtful bit of speccing, shares the Team's Fox F100RL fork and simply substitutes all the XTR parts for XT. UK pricing has the Pro at £2,199 and the Team at £3,299.

What we really like about this bike is that it's got potential way beyond just XC racing. It's light, stiff and fast, especially in stock flat-bar form. But it doesn't have the ultra-aggressive, stop-concentrating-and-it'll-bite handling of some race bikes. Stick wider bars and fatter tyres on and you'll have a great all-rounder that'll retain a fine turn of speed.

There's a treat for fans of the original Zaskar, too - GT is to do a limited-edition run of US-made Zaskar frames in the original Alcoa 6061-T6 tubing, but brought up to date with geometry for 100mm travel forks and disc mounts. And yes, they'll be ball-burnished, and you'll get spare decals in the box. We've no idea how much they're going to be, but we do know that you'll have to get in the queue behind us...

For the full-suspension fans, GT has the appropriately-named Marathon. It's a development of the 2007 carbon i-Drive XC, marrying the front end from that bike to a new carbon fibre swingarm. The new back end is 200g lighter than the aluminium one and noticably stiffer to boot. Specs are the same as the carbon Zaskar (except that the fork has 120mm of travel), and indeed the whole bike feels very similar to ride - just comfier and less clattery on the rocks. Again, there are Team and Pro models at £3,999 and £2,499 respectively.

Nice Zaskar, that would look so pimp with Pace forks, as everyone knows, black bikes are faster!

ok i've just found my next bike, that zaskar! it'll replace the 1996 anodised blue one i have stashed away in my parents garage nicely

Its a lot of new bike to leave stashed in your parents garage.

Was the Zaskar picture taken in the Blue Peter garden?

A nice variety of backdrops for the GT bike pics - where abouts were they all taken?

I rather like the sound of the ltd edition alu Zaskar. They were lovely bikes.

David, what's the anodised blue one doing sitting in a garage then?! And by "replacing it" do you mean you'll buy one to store in your parents' garage too?!

The launch was in Engelberg, Switzerland. In an ideal world I'd have riding and nice static shots of everything. However, in the real world I end up with a random assortment of some bikes in Alpine meadows and some in hotel car parks ;-)

Quite impressed by the new range. Had never considered a GT before.

Oooh, blue Zaskar! Mine's in the garage too ! it's a 99 one tho, just a polished Alu one... Still my all time fave bike

I never got on with my 2000 WC coloured Zaskar. Often wonder if it was the wrong size. I loved my steel Karakorum, proudly hung in the garage. I love my Lightning, proudly rode when not kept in the kitchen.

May be the size, they came up a bit odd. I had to get 16" in the end which was a touch small but the next size up was a monster!

Mmm.... more GT's for mew to buy, could be my fifth, sixth and if I'm going to be really greedy seventh.

So far I've had

A '92 Team Avalanche (that Tange steel tubing was amazing at the time and I still have the frame),

A '95 (I think) RTS3 - I still miss that bike sometimes. I had a new rocker made up to give it a whole 4" of travel!!!

A '96 Zaskar LE in birght yellow with full XTR kit,

ID5 1.0 (my current ride).

I think I see a pattern building up here....

i have judt brought my first GT after owning a trek for 9 yrs. I have now got a 2007 Avalanche 1.0 Disc. I think it is an awesome piece of kit for the money. took a little getting used to but now i love it. good frame to build on in the future

Took a split second for me to realise that I was staring at pictures of my next bike here. I've just spent a year makign expensive upgrades to the alu GT frame I have and all I need is that carbon frame!

But, will the frame be available alone? Anyone know?

I have been trying to decide between a new carbon bike to replace my 1992(?) alu Pantera. The choice was between a Giant xtc and an Orbea alma, the alma feeling like the front runner and then I saw the Zaskar carbon - plans changed

But I have been unable to find any info on when I will be able to get hold of one - next month? autumn? Christmas? 2008? any ideas anyone
