Project Pipedream

A few minute's idle tyre-kicking and chin-scratching around Dave's latest project

The last time we saw this project, it was still a bunch of parts in boxes in need of a bit of spannering. After a nice layer of dust had gathered on all the parts, I finally found the time to put it all together, and here's the result. Quite a looker I think you'll agree.

pipedream pre-build

I liked the Sirius we tested last year so much that I had to build one up for myself. It's been a long time since I've ridden a steel hardtail, and the £225 Pipedream (available in a range of fetching colours) tickled my wallet just enough. I bought a 19.5in in Racing Red (it's not actually called that, but that's what I'm calling it). The frame isn't built out of any particularly pimpy metal, but it is all put together very well. A slightly dropped top tube, well placed cable guides over the top, classy decals and a lovely headbadge.

To deck out the frame I chose mostly FSA components, and more by coincidence than anything the red graphics on the wheels, stem, bars, cranks, seatpost and saddle matched the frame nicely. With SRAM X7 shifters and rear mech, a Shimano LX front mech and an old set of Hope Mono M4 discs, the bike goes and stops perfectly. It also smooths the trails nicely, thanks in part to the slender rear stays being nicely compliant, and the Magura Menja forks up front. The 100mm (also available in 80mm or 130mm) air sprung and oil damped forks are easy to setup - the supplied shock pump even has recommended air pressures stickered on, which is a neat touch. The Dual Arch Design gives a noticeable increase in tracking and steering stiffness over other forks. The action is already very plush, but feels like they'll get better once they're bedded in.

So far, so good then. Stay tuned for more in-depth reports on all the bits and bobs over the next few weeks.

bloody hell - you took longer to build yours than I took to build mine! They are great frames, though.

I ride mine with an inline post and an 80mm stem, so it'd be interesting to see how your setup rides.

Quality bike. Hope you enjoy yours as much as i do mine.

I have found the paint finish surprisingly resiliant as well.
Posted: 15/02/2007 13:12

the wet manky weather didn't help the build time much at all ;)

i may experiment with the stem length a little, and i'll definitely try a shorter stem, just for comparison. it rides very nicely, and i quite like the stretch in the cockpit - it certainly feels, and is actually, very fast.

what colours did you both go for?
Posted: 15/02/2007 13:43

Classy fake Ti

Posted: 15/02/2007 14:06

Suspension seatpost?! Pouf.
Posted: 15/02/2007 14:25

nice build hobo. how are the tyres?
Posted: 15/02/2007 14:29

Aye it is a suss post, and yes i will take being called a pouf(sp) ;-)

Posted: 15/02/2007 14:30

They tyres :-)

As a back tyre they are a Kenda Nevegal copy. If you want the tread of the nevegal (I like) with a bit less 'size' (the 2.35 panaracer sizes small) they are good. It is wearing ok but is worryingly showing quite a few very deep slashes to the main tread area which is down to the sharp rocks i ride.

I dont rate them as a front tyre. The kenda blue groove is 10times the tyre for what i want (Predictable).

Its obviously not a speed freak tyre but rolls quite well imo.

Considering i am going from full suss to hardtail, after the first few weeks of getting lines right etc, i havent had many pinch flats either which some people complain about with panaracers.

I will be interested to know what yours weighs. I think mine came in at 28.5lbs which is fine for general xc stuff.

Figured if i do any enduro type stuff putting light tyres and taking the bashguard off may make a little diff.
Posted: 15/02/2007 14:43

i haven't taken mine near the scales yet. it's worringly heavier than i expected it to be, with all the carbon bits and stuff. i'll try and get it weighed asap. it's certainly not heavy enough to prevent it from being very very fast :)

I havent seen another sirius on the trails ever!! How exclusive is that :-)

Posted: 15/02/2007 15:04

The bike looks pretty nice, the seatstay seems quite long to me how snappy is it?

As for exclusive, I haven't seen anyone riding my local trails on an argos barracuda either...

;-)

...i think it'll probably be a while (i hope) before i see another pipedream on the trails

Thanks Hobo, phone will be on, if I'm outta range give me a text and I'll ring you back laters.

p.s. don't bounce 100's of texts around, I hate texts.

David, add in a PipeDream with Magura forks, which I've never seen on the trails yet and you'll likely never see that.

I am the owner of the original prototype Sirius. The frame that won Gold for WMB magazine and was tested by yourselves.

It's an awesome bike and makes a perfect singlespeed.

Since this photo was taken, a decent SRAM chain and singulator have been added.
Posted: 15/02/2007 22:09

Thought i'd add my Sirius build to this thread.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/152/357343828_421a388130.jpg

It certainly does make a great singlespeed and the steel frame and forks is quite forgiving compared to an old steel bike i used to ride. The geometry makes this bike ride fantastic.

i've changed a few things since this picture added a tensioner due to chain stretch. tyres, pedals etc

running a 90mm stem seems fine, would like to try an 80mm sometime.

I've got a red one, and it's snappy, nimble and has given me oodles more confidence on the techy trails round here. It also weighs quite a bit, but rides as light as any bike I've owned.
Posted: 16/02/2007 08:22

Great to see other Sirius owners here, i've not seen another on the trails either, my other riding pals have on-ones or souls, so still fairly exclusive! Medium fake Ti for me too. I aggree with the snappy nimbleness, it corners fanastically and still smooths out the rough bits. Just before coil revelations were fitted - http://jobysbikes.fotopic.net/p37522733.html
Posted: 16/02/2007 13:45

i'll be taking mine out for another ride tommorrow. can't wait! seems quite a few people have gone the pipedream route then!
Posted: 16/02/2007 17:01

For the money they are a On One alternative. The guy that sells them is very helpfull and have a 5yr warranty :-)

What exactly have you got yours for? Enduro's, hack bike, race bike?
Posted: 16/02/2007 17:04

Just a quick update on my Pipedream Sirius.

Unfortunately the original frame has developed an ovalised headtube :-( Couldnt pin point a creak noise i was getting for a week or so and decided to strip the headset to service and tighten it. The top cup came out in my hands.

Now the good bit. Stuart at pipedreams offered a replacement frame within 12hrs of me reporting the issue and i have a shiney new frame with new headset (Which i got him to fit) all built up ready to ride. I still have the old frame as i havent posted it back to him yet.

David, how are you getting on with yours?
Posted: 11/05/2007 14:30

I've just ordered one of the 631 tubed frames they have in at the moment. Bit lighter at 3.9lbs, and Stuart says stiffer and stronger too.

I've got the "building new bike" hat on
