Shimano Alfine goes to 11

Budget hub gear gets extra range for 2011

The transmission buzz may be all about 10-speed for 2010, but Shimano is going one better with a perhaps surprising component. The 2011 Alfine internal gear hub (yes, it's barely February and we're looking at 2011 parts...) will go to 11, up from the current model's eight. Gear hub fans will of course know that German manufacturer Rohloff's Speedhub hub has 14 speeds, but it does that by being effectively a seven-speed with a two-speed transfer box on the end. The new Alfine hub doesn't do that, so you don't get detectable extra drag in the lower gears.

Alfine still won't be able to match Rohloff for actual range, though. The existing eight-speed Alfine has a gear range of 306%, a Speedhub offers 526% and the new 11-speed Alfine will come between the two at 409%. To put that into context, eight-speed Alfine is roughly equivalent to an 11-34 cassette, while the 2011 unit would be 11-45. Obviously you can tweak the chainring and sprocket sizes to move that range into useful ratios. Given that we've always found the current Alfine to offer enough range for 90% of riding, the new one should be more than ample.

Usefully, the gaps between gears are slightly closer than the current hub too, which will be welcome - the gaps on the eight-speed weren't a deal-breaker, but they took some getting used to if you were familiar with close-ratio derailleur setups.

2011 Alfine will also benefit from a redesigned shifter. Unlike the current unit, the new Rapidfire Plus shifter will operate in the same direction as a conventional derailleur setup, as well as offering Multi Release for multiple shifts with one lever stroke and Two-Way Release so you can operate the trigger with finger or thumb as you see fit.

Prices are yet to be confirmed, but the new Alfine hub won't be far off the price of the old one. Or, to put it another way, a lot cheaper than a Rohloff. The Alfine SG-S700 hub will be available in September.

TBH I am quite excited about it myself.  I am seriously contemplating removing the XT group on my Ti and sticking one of these on.

Hmmm, could be worth a punt, I reckon. It would stop the chain suck on me 853 Inbred, eh? How much is the current Alfine? *goes to check*

£153.99 on CRC.

I like it, but would still need a chain tensioner on my boring old non-slidey dropout frames.....
Posted: 10/02/2010 11:53

So would I IL but the new Alfine tensioner is quite a bit smaller and more subtle than the old one.

Looks good. My P7 has slidey dropouts too

*Ker-ching*

Can you get me some discount Mr B?

I'll make it worth your while.

Looks good.

Mister Bump, do you know if its possible to get hold of a genises io frame in yellow, that I will need to go with the new hub. I don't like the bronze ones that seem to be the only available colour as a separate frame.

The yellow frame only comes as a complete bike, it is not sold as a frame only.  I am regretting selling my silver iO now.

Bit lets face it...that shifter isn't a looker is it? I'd be tempted if there was say a pimpy alternative like maybe an alfTR shifter but, sorry. I couldn't look at that on an all day ride, my eyes would bleed!

If you're spending the whole day looking at your shifter, you're doing something wrong.
Posted: 10/02/2010 20:08

This may well dictate my next frame choice.

If you're spending the whole day looking at your shifter, you're doing something wrong. Well ok, Fair enough I don't look at the shifters. But you do look look down at your bars from time to time, to look at your computer or change of view, or to see how good your new nails look...ok but seriously, I wouldn't buy a shifter without the ability to take off the number switch thing...it's useless!

I honestly don't see what the problem is. IT GOES UP TO ELEVEN!! How cool is that?

Hopefully they'll call it the Alfine Tap!

Sorry for dopey question:how low will low gears be do you think: I use 26/36/48  and 11/24 on my Thorn tourer :the low gears arent really low enough (STI shifters on drop bars seem to be problem): would the new Alfine be lower?
Posted: 15/02/2010 15:40

Sorry: of course 11/34 i meant
Posted: 15/02/2010 15:41

The limiting factor might be the minimum chainring/maximum sprocket you can use - there's only so much torque they'll take. I don't know what that is for the new one. Assuming that you can get the equivalent of 26/34, you'll have to give up some top end - your current gear range is (if I've done this sum right) 574%.

Edit:  Mike said it much better

Thanks: I THINK I understand: more low gears more important than high gears for elderly knees!!

Pity its not avaialble until next year!

Available September, John

Sounds perfect - provided it can take the torque... If it doesn't weigh something totally ridiculous it looks likely to end up on my next hardtail...
