The store carries the entire Specialized range

The idea of single-brand, showcase shops is a common one in the non-bike world - Niketown, Apple Store, Sony Centre, all that stuff. But it's not something that's the norm in bicycles. The vast majority of bike shops carry a number of different brands, which generally means that they'll only be able to have a fairly small part of each range in store at a time.

The alternative approach would be to stick to one brand but have everything that that brand does. And that's Specialized's idea with its new Concept Store, recently opened in Chester. It's an interesting setup, not least because it's right next door to a more conventional bike shop, The Bike Factory. That's less odd than it sounds, as the same chap, Dave Quinn, owns both shops.

If you want to see a Specialized product in the metal, the Concept Store is clearly the place to go - it carries the complete range of bikes, parts and accessories. The store was opened by Specialized founder and CEO Mike Sinyard. "Our aim is to offer the cyclist a more complete experience in the store, with the full range of the product. I think that's very important," he said. "The inspirational images on the walls, the atmosphere, it makes you want to ride and that's really the goal, to connect riders with the brand."

Obviously this is a very different idea for bike retailing in the UK, and it'll be interesting to see how not only the public, but other brands react. Shop owner Dave Quinn doesn't expect any problems, though: "The brands that we work with are very forward thinking. Lots of people see it as a very positive thing. We're appealing to all types of rider and the success is that we’re in both [MTB and road] markets."

Richard Hemington, MD of Specialized UK, said: "People will be interacting directly with the brand. If you go to Sony you'll expect to get more specialist product information than if you go to Curry’s and that's the goal here. Flat screen TVs are cheaper than a year ago but we're actually doing the opposite and asking our customers to spend more money, so to engage them a customer needs the right environment."

One thing's for sure, there'll be more Specialized Concept Stores, but the company isn't planning to swamp the country with them. "In the UK what we recognise is the potential for retailers to open Concept stores. We don't need 100 of them to do that to get the brand experience," said Hemington.

I used to live in Chester back in the day.

I bought my first proper mountain bike from Dave back in 1989. It was the year Shimano introduced rapid fire STI shifters.
My Muddy Fox Courier comp had em. I felt like i was riding a bike from the future!

ahh those were the days!

Of course my S-works Epic is a far superior bike, and I now would vomit if I had to ride off road with a bright green bike with a foot long head stem.
But at the time i loved that bike.

I've been in the new concept store a 'couple' of times, in fact every time we go to Chester I insist on stopping on the way back.

It is brill, they have the whole range in there from the cheapest child's bike up to the mega money pro racers, and they have a fair few demo bikes which it seems they will lend you to take away rather than just ride up and down the street, they all but offered me this the first time I went in.

The staff are dead enthusiastic too.

I can't really see the business sense in opening another shop right next door to your own, surely it is just doubling the overhead, and as the bike factory already have Specialized they can't double the sales, but it is definitely worth a visit if you are passing.

Wouldn't touch The Bike Factory with a barge pole. They tried to insist that Spesh didn't make a woman's Epic and that I was mistaken and perhaps I meant the Stumpy FSR instead. It really would be good if the people running the store actually had a clue about the product line. Other half was in there recently having a nose and said there weren't any high end bikes in. Think I'll use it as a guide for looking at Spesh stuff but defintely buy elsewhere from people who know what they're talking about.

In defence of Bike Factory, I recently bought two bikes from them and was very happy with the service, and the assistant who we dealt with was very knowlegable, nothing was too much trouble. I must admit they were not specialised they were Trek.

They wanted £30 to face a BB ready for HTII and said it would take 3 days!

Went to Alf's in Wrexham charged me a fiver, did it while I waited had a nice chat. Problem was I ended up buying a Fizik Gobi. Would have been cheaper to be ripped of by Bike Factory!

What is wrong with Specialized - well for a start you can't get the damn things!!! They bring ot fantastic top end bikes, but just try and get one ! Bike mags give them brilliant write ups, but there is no supply in Britain. They are like gold dust.

Don't know if it is a production problem but I've tried everywhere to get top end 2007 Enduro's ie the Carbon triple Crown job - but they don't exst. Maybe the bike mags were fantasising ??
