I've never used one myself but the feedback I've had from people who have is that a satellite phone is more useful. The spot isn't super-reliable (you can seem to disappear sometimes) which can cause worry for anyone watching your progress and you can't give nuanced information about your status.

A friend of mine had one on a big ride and it didn't work for the first 3 days.

On the flip side, if you are lying there with a broken back and have limited motor control, the Spot would be easier to use.

I'm sure you're sensible enough not to treat it as your only lifeline or go beyond your limits just because you have it. Aside from wallet damage, those seem like the only dangers.

There's a discussion about the pros/cons on here:

Well I'm not so up to date on these things, but I thought it was just the cheap ones that were made in Taiwan. It's sad if Orange don't make them here anymore.

Soul and blues makes you feel like you're in a mtb video so it's Howlin' Wolf for me.

Jazz is too confusing though and my brain often overloads if shuffle throws up something crazy when I'm descending.

Any punk tends to be fun too so Bad Religion, Converge, Conflict, Ignite etc.

If you want something completely different, I use the Navigator 5 from here...

http://www.overshoe.com/recreational/products/

They're kind of overshoes for trainers, complete with a separate sole. They're waterproof, plenty warm (sometimes a bit too warm for UK) and plenty grippy when I was at Bringewood DH.

Maybe their non-insulated ones would be ideal for winter riding here.
