Simple and well documented answer (i'm qulaified fitness trainer). Rob is right - its the venous return - basically you hammer for hours then, instead of cooling down so the calves (often called the "little heart") can do their best to pump all the rapidly pooling blood back up against gravity you stop abrubtly and have a chat. Calves go "f**k this" and give up and the blood just rests on the non-return valves progresively making the viens more stuffed as time goes on. No-one knew about cooling down ages ago and so just sprinted for home/the cafe and collapsed in a heap. Looks like they are normally ugly rather than a concern as true Varicose viens are - but if in doubt - check it out - you shouldnt get 'em if you cool down and arent susectible anyway |

Causes: All aspects of Position (height, fore and aft etc) : Naff saddle: Spinning fast whilst not making the normal small movements you make all the time that you make on the road,: stiff padding/creme: bent cranks / pedals; lack of airflow... Put a real bike on a turbo and compare - this might give you a clue |

I put them (frog legs - but there are a few makes out there now) on my cyclo cross bike when getting back from accident. They do what they say on the box..... Esay enough to fit. Beware that frogs legs requyire a strip of the bars - I seem to have seen a revioew of another brand, designed for leisure more than cyclo cross that have a aplit bar clamp. |

The use of a gear sided screw-on with a BB lock ring for fixed was pretty standard for ages. The trick was to drift the lock ring on well (acts like using two nuts to lock a bolt ie like a hub axle. This was used for both the Gear side of dual Gear/Fixed hubs and for plain gear hubs. Yes, you stood a good chance of unscrewing the sprocket with serious face_to-_road potential, but heh - we didnt know the meaning of fear in those days - didnt know much else either ;-) Track hubs are still 130mm as far as I know. Why spend £40 + respray ( and get the ends set in to 130mm?) pick up a SH track frame (soem are now made with clearance and MG eyes and F & B brake drillings. remeber your converted road frame will have a lower bottom bracket, probably less robust chainstays and not the sort of sharp handing you need for a track - if you feel so inclined.

Its a nice climb when I've done it on small scale LtBs - but with the hordes you'll be baulked. Dont worry about it - the worse case is waklking with a load of others. BTW when the TdF went over there Sean Yates was asked Q"Wont Ditchling rip the bunch apart ?" A "They wont notice it, they'll be on the big ring ..." So, if you think we've got hills you should have seen the bunch demolish the hill :-)it was great. |
