If you've got to the point where you need to rebuild it, it'll never work as well you'd like it to ever again. My experience comes from trying to extend the life of shifters on a fleet of demo bikes. I've tried every lube I can get a hold of to overcome the friction between the sliding plates in the ratchet mechanism, but once the low friction coating has worn off, they don't last more than a couple of weeks before you need to rebuild them. It's time for a new shifter. And if you want it to last, make it a Shimano one. (and the cost of the mech will be chaper than the cost of more Sram shifters in the long run.) |
