Outside would be preferable, but its just too dangerous to ride on the roads where I live. Here in Singapore there aren't any minor roads longer than a couple of hundred yards, every neighborhood is connected by 2 or 3 lane dual carriageways. Drivers are totally ignorant of cyclists  - its much worse than the UK. I commuted by bike in London for years and it was a breeze compared to this place.

As for time, it gets dark around 7 (latest) all year round, and I'm never home before that anyway. I haven't even mentioned the humidity outside yet...

For me a trainer makes sense, but if I had miles of trails on my doorstep I wouldn't use it.

I've picked one up recently (a kurt kinetic road machnie) and its pretty good. By itself it rivals paint drying for entertainment value, but I can see the TV or listen to music whilst riding it. No different from working out on machines in the gym, if you're used to that sort of thing.

As daftpunk said, you stick a fan in front to keep you cool, and place it where you can see the TV. You could even read a book. Obviously its nowhere near as much fun as being out on some nice trails, but it can be really helpful if you find it difficult to ride due to long work hours. Mine is allowing me 4 or 5 rides a week to keep up the miles, where I'd normally only manage 1, so its been money well spent.

You can reduce the noise and vibration massively by investing in a Conti HomeTrainer tire and putting a mat underneath the whole thing.

Thanks all, I'd still like to go full length outer and not bodge it. I'm going to invest in a Dremel or whatever equivalent i can find here.

The gore cables look good, but I'm put off by the fact you'd need to replace the inner with their own goretex version if it snaps or frays, whereas shimano inner/outer is cheap and plentiful.

I had a look for that article on MTBR, but it seems to have disappeared into the ether, the links to it are no longer working. I guess as long as I can protect the frame well enough in case of slippage it'll be OK.

I'm planning to convert to full length gear cable outers on my P7 to make it more winter proof. It has top tube routed cables with slotted bosses near the head tube and seat tube and 2 more on the seat stay. So what's the best way to convert these 6 slots into round holes that the outers will slot through? Has anyone done this or is it just a bad idea that will trash the paintwork?

I also work in a large financial company and I can agree with a lot of what's been written already. There is an expectation that you just get on with it and don't complain. In reality I think this is garbage. The people who get their own way are the ones that make a noise. If you don't ask you don't get. So what if you are the new boy, they gave you the job on the basis you could do it.

No boss liks to be embarrassed, so either they misunderstand the pressure you are under and think you are handling it fine, or they are taking the piss and the projects are not that important to them, they just want to see how hard they can work you. Either way its up to you to tell them the situation in an honest and professional way. They'll respect you more for it. Don't end up being the scapegoat if it fails.

I've been in a similar position in the past where I lay awake at night stressed about workload. I used to wake up at 3am with cold sweats, was bad tempered, drank and smoked too much, and complained about work and life at every opportunity. Looking back i can't believe I got myself into a situation that was so unhealthy. Don't do it. Talk to the boss, tell him what's what. This will take some weight off your shoulders. Going it alone and taking responsibility for stuff that you can't reasonably do is what's killing you.

I escaped by resigning and taking some time off to think about things. I was lucky enough to have a job to go back to, which I eventually took up. After the time off I saw things with more perspective and vowed never to take it that seriously any more. Now I still get a little stressed at work, especially when working to tight deadlines or dealing with difficult clients but I'm damned if I'm going to think about it after I leave the office cos it just doesn't matter. At the end of the day, you or I or anyone of us could refuse to ever go back to our office, and the world would still turn, the company won't go bankrupt and you'd still be alive.

Ask yourself whether the CEO lays awake at night worrying about your project. More likely they are thinking about how to rape your company for a massive payoff when their screwups get found out. Once you realise this its easier to do your job, take your money and get on with your own life. Its just a job.
