Hi all!

I was having a chat with a couple of other semi-keen cyclists last weekend and we thought of an idea I'd like to test with you.

Would it be a good idea to close certain paths/roads of Hyde Park off for cyclists only, over the summer, on particular days/hours.

Perhaps closing Saturday 10am to 4pm for June and July.  We'd be allowed to cycle the main road that crosses the serpentine, and then either loop around hyde park (take the north road, then the path down to the south road), or we'd loop around kensington gardens - north path, then the broad walk or whatever it's called, and then through the trees on the south side).

Benefits

1) an opportunity for people who have bikes in London but are too scared to use them to actually get on them in a completely safe environment, and hopefully build up enough courage (over a few weeks) to get on the road and use them for fitness/commuting whatever.

2) Building off (1), more people using bikes so creating less pollution and stress on the public transport system

3) Potentially some kind of trade stands area for local bike shops to rent bikes or allow try and buy sessions

Anyway, one way for us to kick this off would be to do an online petition on the no.10 website - http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/

So - what are your thoughts?

a) Completely crazy idea and let's kill it now

b) Great idea let's start the petition

c) Not a bad idea - this is how it could be improved

Let me know!

Cheers!

Hi hi!

We are having on office challenge which will involve the losers having to power part of the lighting of the cafeteria using a bike-powered generator.

Well that's the idea anyway...

Does anyone know where I could hire 5 of these from? Don't want to build one because of the normal Health & Safety/Liability issues if something went wrong...

Many thanks!!!

I've got quite an old Cannondale which I use for the odd bit of XC and quite a bit of knocking around town. The freehub body has started sticking slightly (still rideable, but chain jumps around a bit) so I'd like to replace it. Trouble is that no bike shop seems to stock Coda freehub bodies (it's a Coda 700 hub). Can I just put Shimano onto it?

Many thanks

Two things:

In terms of tyres I can't comment on ice (I live in London so rarely see major ice on the roads) but what I would say is you want the most puncture resistant tyres you can find - changing tubes in the cold is miserable... I use armadillos (as recommended previously)

In terms of getting things dry, I tend to cycle into work in one set and come back in another set, drying both at home...

Has anyone used one of these things? They look quite fun, but I'm not sure whether they would work particularly well or not...

If you haven't seen one, it is essentially a kit which allows you to connect a stationary trainer with a PS/PS2. The faster your back wheel goes, the faster you go in the game. Also, turning the handlebars makes you go left and right in the game...
