the logging in great woods is all part of the managed woods process. its something we will have to work around.

Email me at jim.gardiner@gmail.com and i'll add you to the mailing list for updates.

i can show you some of the good tracks on the quantocks if you like but some you'll have to find for yourself.

Before i start i'll say that i'm usually a Singletrackworld regular but with this I'm trying to reach as large an audience as possible. Feel free to repost or pass this on to any other you feel may be interested.

As some of you may be aware the area known as Great Woods on the north west side of the Quantocks has been heavily forested in the last few months resulting in the destruction of a number of well used and loved trails. Some of these were natural trails and others established through sheer hard work. The area is a working forest and so it is unlikely that this is something we could have prevented. There are still a number of trails that may be at threat including classics like The Chimney and Del's stump.

However, Knottie (another STW regular and long time quantocks local) and I have been discussing the potential for establishing a club to liaise with the Forest Commission, Quantocks Ranger and local authorities with the aim of getting approval for trail building and potential development of the Great Woods area.

Before this idea goes any further we are looking for an idea of how many people would be prepared to join such a club and the level of interaction you foresee. For example would you be prepared to pay a membership fee, donate skills and resources (ie mapping, budgeting, planning, GPS's, spade, shovels and wheelbarrows) and most importantly spend time getting muddy building trails.

I'm going to collate a mailing list so if you want to keep updated email me at:

jim.gardiner@gmail.com

with Quantocks Trailpixies in the header.

I promise not to do anything nasty with your email addresses

i've ridden some tracks round there that come out near the forest office...i'll go have a look.

the one i was talking about is roughly 151384 on the north-west side of the combe. tricky to find the top but sweet as when you do.

never heard of it....gimme a grid ref or description of where it is and i'll go ride it next week and report back

i did find a nice alternative to the top half of the chimney the other day, cuts back into the chimney on the first big corner.

plus I found one of the best bit of singletrack I have ever riden last week. well hidden, downhill and grin inducing for about a km.
