I use Alpine Bikes all the time and find them very helpful, very knowledgeable and generally a very pleasant bunch of people to deal with.
My g/f and I have bought about 4 bikes from them now and they would always be my first port of call if I was on the hunt for another (well, unless I decide to plump for an Airborne)

Have a look at the wheels section of Merlin. I bought LX /X618 from them 18 months ago which, although the LX hubs wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, arrived tight and true and have stayed that way. They are doing a Deore /X618 combo at the moment for about £100, or you could get X618 ceramics for £137.
If you do look at the Merlin site, it's always worth checking the special offers section too. |

Pre 01 Deore front mechs apparently have a tendency to jam up after a while. Trying to free them up again is a bit of a non starter. IF it is just grit you should be okay, but if it's refusing to drop back to the small ring, you probably have a dead mech/
you can pick up an XT front mech on Chain Reaction for about £20. Deore is even cheaper.
XTR = fragile crap for people with more money than sense (IMHO) |

The missus just bought herself a Gary Fisher Big Sur 'Genesister' at the weekend and absolutely adores it. Couldn't believe the difference it made to her riding....looked round expecting her to be miles back and she came honking past me!
The Tassejara in the same range is at the top end of your price bracket, so might be worth a look. Seemed to be a pretty reasonable spec from what I could see of it. The Trek WSD range also seem to get positive reviews from loads of women bikers. |
