Howies Base Layer
Posted: 09/03/03
'Best Made Base Layer around from UK Supplier'
Strengths:
Without question the best put together base layer I have seen or used. Second skin fitting with close attention paid to quality stitching, super comfort and performance.
Weaknesses:
Get the right size this is a second skin fit.
Overall:
The guys and girls at Howies have provided continued good service and products. They have had problems supplying the base layer and I have waited for them to get stock and supply me with one (problems now sorted). In brief I waited over 6 months for this and I'm over the moon with it, great product, great service and outstanding performance from the best Base Layer you will ever buy.

'CARRYS EVERTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK'
Strengths:
Good fit, well made and big enough for spare clothing/ parts and food ect. Holds plenty of water, more than enough for most rides.(ie up to 4/5 hours)
Weaknesses:
None - store the bladder in the fridge, stops it going moldy. If it does go moldy spend 65p on sterilising fluid, job done.
Overall:
Not to big and bulky, stores everything you need for a day out. Put hot ribenna in it on cold days and it doubles as a back warmer!!!
Good value all round.

'GREAT FULL SUSSER'
Strengths:
Build quality, lockout, comfy for long and short rides. Deals with the ruff stuff and at home on the road.
Weaknesses:
None really - stock tires are mud pluggers, change them before you leave the shop.
Overall:
I've had my bike 8 months its done Cwmcarn,Afan Argoed, local rides, 600 road miles (had an eye op couldnt go off road). Just keeps going with no problems. 2003 has a remote lockout which makes it better.

'NICE SUMMER SOCK'
Strengths:
low cut, light weight, breathable
Weaknesses:
No padding as found on good quality walking socks that I also use
Overall:
Great for the summer, cut is good, could do with more padding for longer rides.

'ENTRY LEVEL SPD '
Strengths:
Great to get started. Used summer and winter, have stood up well and I've given them a beating. Off road mainly, did a 2 day 180 mile road trip on my MTB no problem.
Weaknesses:
Need an over shoe for winter but there not ment to do winters.
Overall:
Good value up to the job, just gone SPD and dont want to pay more causes you dont now if you'll like it. Just the shoe for you.

Endura Krypto Overshoes

'WARM FEET NICE!!'
Strengths:
Fit well over SPD shoes, keeps you dry, warm and clean. The reflective strip is the bizz for dark nights.
Weaknesses:
If you ware trainer type spd's there thin fitting, not the coolest in a fashion sense.
Overall:
Only expected to use them on the worst of days, havent stoped using them, even though other club members said I looked a prat. They got wet, cold feet and moaned on long rides, I just looked a prat.

Weaknesses:
The pad aint the best but they cost £24 so what do you want.
Overall:
These are worth the money, endura quality cheap and up to the job. There £24 if you want more pay more.

'EXTRA PADDING WITH OUT THE GO FASTER LOOK'
Strengths:
These a great for under MTB baggy shorts keeps your bits safe and protected as well as your fashion sence. Usual Endura quality.
Weaknesses:
These can get a bit warm on longer rides you'd be better off with cycling shorts.
Overall:
If you dont like the go faster look and want more comfort buy them or ungrade your bike to full suss.

Briko Briko Klips

'JUST WHAT YOU NEED FOR CYCLING IF YOU CANT SEE WITHOUT GLASS'
Strengths:
Excellent in strong sunlight and even in low light condtions. Cheap alternative to Oakley prescription frames. Keeps the wind out nicely.
Weaknesses:
Big frames!! take over your face a bit, with the prescription lense in also a tad heavy, you will need a strap to keep um comfortable.
Overall:
These frames did a great job, on and off road. I've had laser treatment now but still use the frames. Briko frames are very well made and lense quality is excellent for the price.
