The mighty bacon sandwich is central to the mountain biking experience - many riders judge the bike-friendliness fo a cafe based on the quality of its bacon butties, and rightly so.

It's fitting, then, that according to BMW's Good Food Ride website (some sort of promotional thing for the 1 Series, but containing quite a lot of handy reviews of eateries across the British Isles), the best bacon sandwich in the country is served at a mountain bike centre.

The centre in question is Coed Llandegla, the cafe is Oneplanet Adventure Cafe run by Ian Owen and Jim Gaffney and the award-winning sanger the result of a careful combination of local produce - bacon from Evans the butcher in Wrexham, baps from The Village Bakery in Coedpoeth.

We like the sound of the rest of the menu, too: "a menu packed with decent local fare such as lamb and leek pâté with crusty bread, mussels cooked in garlic, and home-made burgers topped with dry-cured ham and a poached egg - hearty fare undoubtedly, but cooked with a laid-back flair and style." Our mouths are watering now...

That's not the only news from Coed Llandegla - the bike shop at the centre has also added Santa Cruz to current brands Kona and Cove. It's got demo bikes available, too.

And then there's the trails themselves, freshly bolstered by the addition of a 1.6km "black run". The jumpy/bermy/droppy/shore-y trail is the work of MTB long jump record holder Jason Rennie and has garnered plenty of positive comments.
