Stuart Lockyear's Moots YBBeat

The bit of the site where we take a look at interesting or extravagant bikes that the members have cooked up...

Titanium loveliness

I dreamed of a disc-specific Ti hardtail made of the highest quality titanium. I had a 1997 Pace which lacked disc mounts and was starting to feel harsh on longer rides. A conference in Washington DC this year provided the perfect opportunity to source America's finest.

A friend has a Seven Sola (Litespeed/Merlin are no longer in the same class in my view) so after much research I ordered a Moots frame from Speedgoat.com to be delivered direct to my hotel in DC. Each frame is hand-built to order so with only 8 weeks to go the only one Moots could build in time was the their most popular model - the soft-tail YBBeat.

I also ordered Thomson stem and post, Monkeylite bars, King headset and 959 pedals. Speedgoat.com were fantastically helpful. It arrived at my hotel the same day I did, got packed into a suitbag and successfully negotiated through UK customs. The frame was so gorgeous that my budget went out the window - only the best would do - Fox Float RLs, Hope Minis, King hubs on X517, XTR.

The finish and welds on the frame are as Speedgoat promised “off-the-charts good”, the shock is just enough to take the sting out the trail without compromising power transference. It's very fast and very smooth, the handling is, as Moots boast, telepathic. I love my Moots - I really don't think it could be improved in any way.
