Affordable titanium

Pipedream frame is available with a choice of convertible (left) or regular (right) dropouts

More home-grown titanium loveliness is now available from new British company Pipedream Cycles, brainchild of Alan Finlay and Stuart Davies. Pipedream's angle is low-hype simplicity, an approach that's reflected in the range of frames. Well, we call it a range, actually it's one frame with a host of options.

The £699 basic chassis is made from seamless, plain gauge 3Al/2.5V titanium tubing. Pipedream reckon that butted tubing adds a lot of cost without saving very much weight (although they'll do you a butted frame if you want one), and with the Large (19in) frame hitting the scales at a claimed 3.1lb they may be on to something. The regular frame has conventional seatstays and 6Al/4V plate dropouts with integrated disc mount. If you fancy a bit of singlespeed action, an extra £100 gets you the convertible frame, allowing you to unbolt the vertical dropouts and bolt in track ends. A slotted disc mount caters for wheel adjustment.

The pierced wishbone back end on the frame pictured is another option, with eccentric bottom brackets, strength-enhancing gussets and a choice of finishes also on the options list. Geometry is "classic contemporary", with the frames being designed to run 100-130mm travel forks.

It all looks good on paper (and in pixels) - we'll be able to tell you more when a test frame arrives. In the meantime, head over to www.pipedreamcycles.com for more details.

Notoriously Bad Typist

That disk brake bracket looks rather flimsy to me. I mean they's a fair bit of metal, but normally they're directly on the seatstay, are the forces simply not enough to make that move?
