If you're anywhere near Rheged, Cumbria (home to the National Mountaineering Exhibition) on Friday 18 November, you should probably head to the venue's IMAX cinema for The Great Wheel Invention. And what's that? It's the evening of the Kendal Mountain Film Festival dedicated to mountain bike films. The evening will be hosted by The North Face's Keith Byrne - TNF are sponsors of a new trail in Grizedale Forest and Keith's a keen rider himself. The event is supported by Grizedale Mountain Bikes and Cycle Active. You can look forward to a mix of stuff, from freeridey New World Disorder-style films to deeper, more serious films like The Thin White Line, all shown on Rheged's 60ft-wide screen. Kick off is 7.30pm. Find out more at www.mountainfilm.co.uk or www.rheged.com. The ticket line is 01768 860 090.

The organisers of this year's Cycle Show tell us that the show "was even bigger and better than ever before with almost 20% more people passing through the doors". Which would seem to indicate that the move to ExCel from Islington was a success. What we don't yet know is how many visitors that actually is. And we can't actually recall how many there were last year so we're struggling to work it out. Anyway, various people are quoted as saying nice things about it - we particularly like this comment from John Deering from Evans Cycles: "The standard of customer is superb". So anyone who went along can congratulate themselves on being a top-notch punter. Anyway, we expect that all this means it'll be back next year - we'll see you there...

You can expect to see more riders under the Transition Bikes banner in 2006 - the UK arm (or wing, take your pick) of the company has launched a "Grass Roots Young Rider Scheme". It's essentially a selective discount deal - if you're between 13 and 21 and can persuade Transition that you've got potential but need some support, then you could be on the receiving end of sizable discounts on frames and kit, plus a shot at a full team ride for 2007. The first Transition Grass Roots Rider is 16 year old Ben Wolfe from Hampshire - he'll be racing the NPS DH series on a DirtBag. If you'd like to join him, get in touch with Transition - head for uk.transitionbikes.com.
