The ever-popular Rough Ride enduro will return to the border county of East Radnorshire on 8 June 2008, with original title sponsor Marin back on board.
A big part of the Marin Rough Ride's enduring appeal is the course. It's the work of local access guru Jeremy Atkinson, and runs mostly on wild moorland trails. The 75km full route will have around 7,000ft of climbing (otherwise known as "quite a lot", but of course there's an equal amount of descending...) and Jeremy promises "no forestry roads, no bike-carrying bogs and very little farmland". The trails used remain fully ridable in all conditions, so with any luck the early June date should make it particularly fine.
Want to check out the kind of trails to expect? Have a look at the Routes section at www.roughrides.co.uk and particularly sections 1-3. While the Rough Ride itself takes place on Sunday, the event HQ will be open all weekend so there's scope for a bit of a warm-up on the Saturday...
The organisers recommend making sure that you're self-sufficient with food and water, although there will be refreshment stops available with drinks, cake (we'll say that again - CAKE), bananas and the like. And to the delight of many, there'll be a vendor of bacon sandwiches stationed at the long route lunch stop.
While the Marin Rough Ride is a ride, not a race, you will be timed for you own records - to avoid a log-jam at the start, riders can set off any time between 10 and 10.30am. The route will be waymarked and marshalled, plus you'll get a free route map from Tracklogs, so no excuses for going the wrong way.
As well as the excellent course, the Rough Ride has a wide array of other things going for it. There'll be a free post-ride meal, T-shirt, free camping (with the event centre well-served with toilets, changing facilities and hot showers), a roving event photographer, lots of spot prizes up for grabs (including frames from co-sponsor Dialled Bikes and, it says here, "gallons of cider") and title sponsors Marin will be there with a fleet of demo bikes for you to have a spin on.
A great course with added cake and hot showers? Just the job. Find out more and enter online at www.roughride.co.uk.
