At the time of writing it's August. Not, we'd admit, traditional jacket-reviewing season, but it looks like November outside so we'll go with the flow. This here is Fox's Trooper jacket, part of the company's technical riding wear range. Fox isn't the first company we'd think of when considering a waterproof jacket, but first impressions are good - the Trooper is comfy, although clearly cut for the stouter (and shorter-armed) rider.

The fabric is nothing particularly out of the ordinary, but claims a high level of waterproofness and breathability. It's certainly fairly waterproof, although the water-repellent coating was quickly overwhelmed. As for breathability, it's moderate at best. Thankfully there's a mesh liner, so you're not directly in contact with condensation on the inside of the jacket.

All the usual features are present and correct - drop tail, various pockets (two on the sides, one round the back, one chest), underarm vent zips, waist drawcord, adjustable cuffs - and we like the reinforced lower sleeves to ward off sticky brambly bits.

Verdict

The Trooper looks good, but performance is merely OK and the price is high for what you get.
