DHB Merston long sleeved jersey

dhb09_merstonjersey_l (15K)

A lot of MTB winter wear at the moment seems influenced more by outdoors kit than traditional cycling garb, but DHB's Merston long-sleeved jersey bucks that trend - it's very definitely a cycling jersey, with a long front zip and the ubiquitous trio of pockets around the back (plus an extra zippered key/change pocket).

The Merston is made from T-ISO fabric, a soft, brushed material that's almost embarrassingly pleasant to the touch. It's somewhat porous, which helps breathability but does little to keep the wind out - pack a gilet if there's a breeze (or you anticipate going fast). Finishing off are a hem gripper and a reflective logo around the back. If you don't do yellow, there's a slightly less in-your-face red colour option.

DHB's specs for the Merston put the temperature range at 10-18°C - perhaps we run hotter than some, but 18 seems a tad ambitious, we're into short sleeves by then. Stick a good base layer underneath, though, and it'll keep you toasty in single-digit temperatures. It's not as warm as a fleece midlayer, but it's also more compact and arguably more versatile.

The cut of the Merston is definitely on the snug side (or "Performance Fit", it says here), but we don't object to that in winter - the last thing you want out in the cold, wind and wet is acres of flappy fabric all over the place, and a garment like this is likely to find itself under at least one additional layer too, so the less room it takes up the better.

Ups and downs

good Comfortable, usefully warm, good price

bad Occasionally a little draughty

Verdict

If you favour the aero/race look in colder weather, the Merston is well worth a look. You'll need a gilet or jacket to keep the wind out, though.
