Sea Otter Report 7: DT Swiss

Alright, so I screwed up and forgot to take a picture of the new M210 shock - here's the press release photo to make up for it. Designed as an all-mountain competitor to Fox's hugely popular RP23, it's available with platform damping in a wide range of lengths. Platform damping isn't adjustable, but DT Swiss reckon the OEMs (target market for the product) will be tuning it for each bike.

A new fork from DT Swiss - the XRC 100 Race Ltd. 100mm travel, 2.6lb including remote lockout, improved bushings and for the first time postmount. All production's been moved to Switzerland, expect to see these on the shelves for around $1,550 in May.

The new XRC1350 wheelset might well weigh 100g more than the currently available 1250 model, but it's around $500 cheaper (at a still not insignificant $2,800) for what's effectively a 240S hub with UD carbon rim.

XRC1350 also available in front.

Carbon rims for freeriding? Close, but not quite - the new EXC1550 is designed for "Enduro Cross" and "All Mountain", but word is they'll probably work fine on bigger stuff if you're a smooth rider. There's no denying that a 1550g/$2,800 wheelset would be very tempting for those looking to lighten up burly bikes. In related news DT Swiss have also realised that the cheese metal they had previously made 5.1D rims from was just too soft, and have hardened them up substantially. Good news.

If you find your DT hub isn't picking up fast enough for you, [rototype 36-tooth freehub ratchets are in development - 10° engagement instead of the usual 18 means lightning fast pedal response. Good news is they'll be retrofittable to all existing Star Drive hubs.
